1956 Ford Fairlane Battery
-
I own a '56 Fairlane passed to me from our family when my grandfather died. I had it towed to the shop for a transmission leak, and they called and said it needs a new battery. I thought I read in a forum that this was a 6-volt battery in the car, but when I mentioned it to the mechanic he was confused. I can't find anything on line or in the owner's manual. Without driving down there and checking myself, does anybody know if this is a 6-volt standard in the Fairlanes?

Marconi is correct. 1955 was the last year for 6 volt systems in American cars. They switched to 12 volts in 1956. They also switched from a positive ground system to the current negative ground systems that year.
I used to own a 1956 Fairlane Victoria 2-door hardtop and wished I had kept it from the minute I got rid of it. Good luck with yours. -
