Essex 4 cyl cars 1919-23
-
The Essex 4 cyl cars were fabulous automobiles for their day. What happened to them? They were the firs Hudson F-Head engines, the next version of which was the Greater Super Sixes of '27-29. They won all sorts of competition events in their day against bigger and stronger cars because they were small and light. Now granted their box styling left something to be desired as they aged but it is certainly part of their appeal today in antiquity.
I took this picture at Red Burke's meet in Fort Bragg, CA in 1986. I don't remember the guest's name that had the E4-speedster. Seems like he was from Tahoe or Reno. And the second pic is Red's own E4 touring car at the time; either a '19 or 20. And third is a '22 E4 coach I owned for a couple of years almost 3 decades ago.
