Black Plate!
-
HI! I remember that on a few adds for old cars there was something about black plates. It seems important or collectible? I have a black plate from 1961 or 1963 (if I remember well) since my car is from California. I would like to know what it's all about. Thanks. Michel.

California changes the color of the plates every few years. Some people like to keep the same color plates that were used at the time the car was new. For restorers, the original plates are important.
I bought a very nice 64 El Camino with original plates several years ago. But because the previous owner had 50+ outstanding parking tickets in Los Angeles I bought new plates to keep from being pulled over by the police. The original plates were not that important to me.

Thank you Lee for the info. If I understand well, these plates can be used "officialy"? Here, ( Quebec,Canada)let say, if you have a 1957 car, since we only have one "official" plate for the car, that sits on the back bumper, owners tend to put any 1957 plate they found and put it on the front bumber. Old plates are not in the data base anymore. On newer cars, some people will put a plate ( still on the front) that was in use the year they were born. Thanks again for the info. Michel.

That is interesting what you can do with license plates in Quebec. In Calif we are required to have matching plates front and rear. If not, tickets are received at the most inapropriate times.

It's the same in Illinois Lee. It makes it difficult for people with the cars that do not a provision for a plate on the front, like Corvettes.
