262 Engine

Which 262 was the best out of all the years they were built?

the 262 engine from 1948 to 1954. the HP was 121HP in 1948 and 140hp in 1954 the last year for the 262. but all 262 engines wear good they ran cooler than the 308.

I agree they all were good. I like the 51-54 the best. The 48-50 had a tendency to develop hair line cracks in the cyls. If they didnt leak coolant they still would run a long time. My great uncle had a 49 with cracks in all 6 cyls and ran for years. The 51-54s had a reinforced block and some times cracked in the valve seats. Hear again if it wasnt to bad it would run for many miles. I have one that has a cracked valve seat for 50+ years and is still running fine. The valve will burn if the crack gets to big. After the blocks were cast they were stored for about a year to age the steel before being finished into a workable motor. If you overhaul a Hudson engine DO NOT USE CHROME rings. They will never seat like they should do tothe hardness of the block.

'54 had the highest output... and from an age and engineering standpoint you could say the most advanced/refined 262 Hudson built before they discontinued that engine.

So why do Hudson specify in the '53-'54 Mechanical procedures supplement, to use chrome top rings in the 202 and 308 motors? I couldn't get my Jet to behave at all until I fitted a set of chrome rings.If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging. -
About the chrome rings. Who knows. This was told to me by a Hudson mechanic years ago back when you could still buy new Hudson. Beings I never have had to overhaul a Hudson engine I real have not had any experience at it. Maybe rings were different in those years. Go with what works. Glad it worked out for you. Were jet engines made out of the same material as the big Hudsons? I would be interested in knowing?
