Pricing or overpricing on Ebay

I try to pull up this post by "twelch" and get an empty screen. What has happened to the post?Brownie

Maybe eBay hammered it. They have everything so bundled up it takes a Philadelphia Lawyer to figger it all out.

Gee, I thought that this thread would bring out a bunch of comments. Guess I will start them with my recent experience. I just sold my 50 sedan on ebay and made the decision, with some help from my wife, to sell by dropping the reserve. I contend that the market is soft right now. I back this up with every car on ebay either has a high price attached to it or they do not reach reserve. The step-down convertibles are not reaching 30K no matter how good they are. The highly sought after stepdown coupes are topping out below 20K. In my (never to be humble) opinion, ebay is nothing more than a place to show pictures of your car and get a bunch of low-ball (insults) bids. Good time to hang on to that beloved Hudson.Brownie

Seems like Ebay isn't as "relevant" as it used to be- so much scamming, overinflated reserves, sniping games, etc., that many (like me) don't even look at it anymore, so maybe its not as good a guage of prices as it used to be. Craiglist kind of took over, but is now succumbing to the same problems, in my similarly never to be humble opinion. I think a combination of those two, plus an ad in WTN might be just the ticket.
However, that was certainly a reasonable buyer's price on your car- but that happens so seldom, most of us have pretty much given up on Ebay. -
I agree the eBay market place is tainted. I think that eBay brought this upon themselves in the way they restructured their system. Since eBay removed the nuetral and negative feedback option, only allowed paypal and electronic payments to pay for items, its all been down hill. By doing that, it removed most of the accountability that provided a good or bad public reputation for doing business. This makes it little more than an advertising tool which is why i think you see reserves so high and the like. hopefully someone will call and buy it off line to save the 10%- 15% fee, or whatever the fixed fee for a vehicle is now.
This lack of public negative feedback is inviting more scamming, non serious buyers/ sellers, and added frustrations for those who want to move product in a swap type environment. The eBay veterans are now too deep into the ebay system and feedback score to turn thier backs and walk away.
Ive been using ebay since about 2003. Ive bought and sold vehicles on there. Ive prefered it to maximize my dollars per headache and have had very very few issues with buyers or sellers until the last year or so. I much prefer it to paying too much money for a local newspaper ad, or other traditional means. Ive had much more headache and tirekickers with locals than with the internet or ebay in general.
But with the way its setup now, its only an advertising tool, not a real market anymore. You cant afford to sell anything on there for less than $25 which is a shame. Craigslist works alright if you dont post you contact info, which is somewhat discouraging... but it is free.

Gunbroker still has positive and negative ratings on sellers and buyers. That helps when you are interested in something, you can still check out the seller. Bad sellers are thrown off the site.
