Kaiser transmission adapter

Despite a guarantee from the guy that rebuilt it that it would work like new, the old hydramatic in my 54 Manhattan leaked like crazy from day one and finally died again within 6 months of rebuild. I've had it. Have any of you guys used an adapter to put a Chevy transmission on the Kaiser engine. (There's a company in Minn. that makes one). If so, how well did it work?

Jason, The problem you ran into was that you sent your car to sombody who "thinks" he knows about older transmissions and sadly dosen't. There is a man in Charlotte named Gene Corey who does great work on older transmissions. He has a large shop and stays busy. But he is the 'go to' guy when it comes to those kind of transmissions. It dosen't matter if it's a Hydromatic, standard 3 speed or an overdrive unit , Gene can do the work. Don't be mistaken, he ain't cheap BUT if you want to get one done right he's your guy.Good luck and don't give up on your origional tranny just yet.

I want to keep the car as original as possible. In fact, I went the route of having the hydramatic repaired in lieu of an adapter just because the guys in the Hudson forum told me what a great transmission the hydramatic was. But I give up. If I even keep the car, I'm going to put a transmission in it that just about any shade tree mechanic can fix. Guys like Gene are a dying breed. I'm not going that route again.

I agree with Hudzilla. The skill needed to rebuild an older transmission isn't at every transmission shop these days. Once rebuilt properly, you should be able to run it for years without a problem. Mine has run for 25 years (not a daily driver!) without a hitch - it's a good, solid transmission. You'll spend less and have less headaches having the original transmission rebuilt properly by someone with the skill versus shoehorning a modern transmission into your car.

conversions are a nightmare.... once the trans is fixed RIGHT you'll have a far better car. take it from me im trying to put a 55 hudson engine and gearbox into a 51 hudson, even that has enough differences to make things frustrating

I installed the transmission adapter and now have a 350 Chevy transmission on the car. It's works well, but the rear main seal has a leak that I can't get stopped. I inherited a 350 Chevy engine from my dad that I'm going to hook to that transmission. So much for 50's technology.
