Starter problems
-
The starter on my Commodore keeps working loose after I drive it for a while. I tighten it up and it lasts for maybe two or three cruises and then I'm afraid to cut it off for fear the bendix won't mesh with the flywheel. Is there a solution that does not require taking the transmission out?
Jason -
You have a big problem. Someone took the trans out and lost the 2 special shouldered bolts that fit between bell housing and motor plate. That is why your starter keeps coming loose. A straight thru bolt will not work. Contact Jason at albrights for these 2 special bolts. Have to remove the trans to install them. Walt.

Actually Walt, I replaced those two bolts about five years ago with the correct ones that I got from Dave Kostanek. I think the bell housing on that overdrive transmission is messed up. If I have to take that heavy overdrive out one more time, then I'm going to put the smaller standard transmission back on the car that it came with.

Try fitting star washers under the nuts, and torque to 45 lbs. Both sides. If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.

This is a "shade tree fix". Seems to help keep the starter from moving around during the cranking.
