I think we all did - if not 3rd grade then other grades. I was doubly "blessed" - I was a lefty and back in the day you were quite literally forced to become right handed. I still have scars on my knuckles from that damned ruler. Back then parents, more or less, went along with the "establishment"!!!!
As I grow older I find myself reverting back to being, at least partially, a lefty.

That's what you would call a handsome woman... about as pretty as a mud fence.
BTW, the Hudson looks like it's rollin on modern day radials!

2nd Grade Teacher, Edith T. Cunningham.
Carried a ruler 1/4 thick by 2 by 18 inches. Felt the smart end at least once.
Often wore black dresses that swept the floor. Couldn't see her feet so you couldn't tell which way she was headed.
Kinda like an Adirondack hat. Pointed at both ends so the skeeters can't tell which way you're going.

My 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Parrish. Her husband was a barber and she had a razor strop. One side was fairly smooth and the other was rough. You held out both hands and she smacked you across the palms. The rough side raised a pattern on your hand. It was affectionately known as "getting the strap." As I recall, after the third time my behavior improved somewhat...
