crankshaft nut size

    If you're referrinf to the bolt that holds the vibration dampner on, it's either 1 3/16 or 1 1/4 inch wrench size.

    It's 1-1/2 inch and if i remember its actually a bolt that holds on the vibration dampner on the crank shaft? Because i unscrewed that a bit and used a puller against the bolt to get the dampner off.

    Thanks guys. It's just too cold down here in NC to go out to the garage and measure it. I'll stop at the hardware store on the way home from work to get one.

    Tough to get any sympathy from the guys up here in the deep freeze, Jason. :sick:
    I assume you're going to pick up a 1-1/2" socket to fit the bolt, not the bolt itself. Hardware store obviously wouldn't have that... but you can order a (12-point) dampener bolt for a 455 Buick through Jeg's or Summit.

    Maybe I'm not expressing my correctly. All I need is the socket to fit the nut on the vibration damper so I can rotate the crank and thus the flywheel. Why do I need a dampener bolt for a 455 Buick? Is the 1 1/2 socket what I need or am just confused.

    If you have lost the bolt I think you will find Hudson used the same one all the way back into the 30's,

    A 1-1/2" socket will fit your stock Hudson dampener bolt, Jason.... I just ran out to the "cooler" to verify that. You don't need a Buick bolt unless you've lost or stripped yours and have no source for a replacement.

    '37 to '47 dampner bolt is different than the '48-'54 bolt as is the dampner.

    For the "big" tools, I always have good luck at Northern tool or Tractor supply. Their prices are fair and the quality is good. Avoid Harbor Freight to save your knuckles and frustration.

    Also, you will most likely need a 3/4 drive breaker bar. You can use a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter, but then the length is an issue (radiator clearance). Also, I happen to know someone that broke at least 3 1/2" drive ones using said adapter:whistle: The guys at Sears counter where wondering what happened ...

    Make sure you get a simple, flat wrench with a long arm to do the job. Anything with socket/ratches/angles etc. won´t fit between the radiator and the nut... I found out the hard way...
