Has this Forum died?
-
I can only assume it's the new format so highly touted by the "administrator", but this is only the 2nd post today, a Saturday.
"Attendance" & posting have drastically declined in what used to be an energetic & frequently visited site - too bad.
What do you guys think???????? -
Personnaly I look at the number of posts just on this part of the HUDSON site. Just this discussion section has more posts started than most of the other forums do in their whole site. Sometimes there just ain't much to say
Bob Hickson -
I think the forum is pretty busy - people are beginning to figure out the new format and getting comfortable with it. This is normal in any new endevor - a lot approach it with suspicion and wonder if it will be as good, or better, than that they are used to.
Myself, now that I'm getting a handle on it I like the new format. As I've posted earlier posting pictures is a lot easier now - I never really figured out how on the old forum - and accessing personal messages is also a lot easier. Before it was a bit of a hassle trying to access the PM page - now, just click on New Messages.
You want something that has died - trot on over to the Hudson chat page. 8, 10 years back that was running, literally, 24/7 (maybe even 35/15!!!). You could always find at least 10 people most anytime of day. Then the original ClassicCar site died during the .com wars and when it came back most had gone elsewhere. When it went down a 2nd time that pretty much shut it down for good. While we still have a chat page there are less than 10 people that show up with any regularity. It's rather a shame - we used to discuss every thing from Aardvarks to Zebras and it was a lot of fun.
So I think this forum will pickup once people get used to the "new" format. Just takes a little getting used to - and, as I said, it's seems to me, at least, to be a lot easier to use that the original version.
Y'all take care now, hear.
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr

I agree with you Alex. I think some people may be still getting used to the new format. It is much better than the old one. Piece of cake to post pics now. Still, makes you wonder where everyone went.

Well, traffic to ClassicCar.com is up 15% since the new format was placed online. Traditionally, October through the first part of January is the slowest time of the year for this site and the Internet as a whole, unless you are Amazon or some other retail site.
Additionally, Internet use is down about 30% as a whole from 3 years ago. Many people have dumped their cable and Internet connections to save money. Signs of the time.
Last, we did not change to the new format to piss-off the membership. The other forum software was at the end of its development and support was no longer available for that version.
Changing to the same providers software was not a good option for our users and would have been cost prohibitive to covert to. Many have ask, why not just keep the old software...well the hackers and spammers would have just wiped out the site after a few months. We were not getting security patches and updates for the older version anymore and the code would have been compromised in short order. The hacking was crazy in the last days of the old software....just ask Jon.
We did lose some search engine traffic by going to the new format. It will take about 6 months to rebuild that traffic to former level, but a sacrifice we had to make to swtich.
Is this software the end-all to all forum programs? No, but it has a continuing development group dedicated to it, over 10,000 developers that work on the code year round. As things change or improved, we will bring those updates to our membership. Its a better system to use and manage. Its safe for our members and it does not require a bunch of crazy code to log into. Its just better all around.
Change is hard for people. For some its defeating....for others, its a challenge. I like to think we can learn new things and work to fix those areas that need improvement. I know I am committed to listening and working to improve the forum. I hope you will let others know we are here and keep posting your views.Ted J. Welch

I just got here today. I've been out in the garage (with the furnace on by the way)trying to save a 70-year old Hudson Eight engine all day. I'm gettin there.

HI guys, there might be a lot of reasons. I'm new here since June I guess and never been in a forum before but found it so interesting that I try to come at least once a day. Since I am not as experienced as the other members, I am a little shy as to give my opinion when it is a mechanical topic. But I try to do my best when I can tell a car story for example or congratulate a fellow member who has done a restoration or else. Winter time should be a good time for me (Canadian winter)to have more time to post pictures etc. And, as an extra, I can improve my English writing. I hope more people will come and do the same. And, I am learning a lot, just reading the topics and their answers. You're such a great bunch of guys! Will come back for sure!
Michel. -
As somebody famous once said, "Rumors of my death are greatly exagerated."
Probably just kind of a slow time for postings- everybody kind of buttoning up for the winter, fewer guys going on joyrides, not as many cars for sale, etc. I think the new forum is an improvement (I can finally post pictures- I just knew there was a reason I was procrastinating on learning how to do it!).
Lets just hang in there, and keep up on the board- I'm sure it will get back to the previous level after winter hibernation is over. -
I'm getting use to it. Still don't like it, change, that is.
A few things I'd like to see:
1. A preview button when posting. To make sure I got everything right before it's posted. I know for some of you this computer stuff is easy, for some of us it ain't.
2. How about a stickey for posting pictures?!?! You guys did that on the last format change. AND it helped very much!
3. I don't like the automatic "subscribe" deal. That makes me feel like when I get a charge on my credit card because I didn't call and UN-renue some service. I shouldn't be automatically e-mailed a bunch of times because I commented on a thread. It should be a check this box to subscibe, not to UN-subscribe. IMO
4. Lastly, and this might just be my settings. If I jump around on this forum from one area to another it will often ask me to sign in again.
5. Finally, I hope that the forum here is made as user friendly as possible. I think the whole point of this is to share information on Hudsons, not for us to learn computer stuff. I appreciate that some of the less computer savy but knowledgable Hudson guys are on here making an effort to share their experience and information. Let's make it as easy as we can for them to do just that.
This forum is great,... because of the shared information. -
1) Preview Button: Maybe coming in the future. However, there is little need for it, there is a Enlarge/Shrink link on the left hand side of MESSAGE box to enlarge the post to see all of it before posting online. Other than making the message space larger, a preview is of little value. True, that bold and codes do not show until posted. This gives some value to your request.
2) Instructions "Pictures": Pictures and file uploading are so much easier with the new software. You have two options. One is to use the ATTACHMENT feature below the MESSAGE box to browse in your image from your computer. The second method allows you to select the IMAGE LINK icon from the tool bar above the MESSAGE box and cut and paste an image that is already online somewhere.
3) Automatic "Subscribe": Ok, by popular demand....the Subscribe Feature is now a manual selection instead of an automatic one.
4) Sign in Again: We have NOT seen or heard from anyone else on this issue. Your computer must be allowed to accept a cookie from this site and store it. Some anti-virus and adware software sweep these cookies as soon as you change pages. Its a computer setting on your end, we have no control over those issues.
5) Made as user friendly as possible: I hope you don't feel that we have gone out of our way to make the new software unfriendly. That would not serve anyone very well, would it? The Internet is a computer based environment, it comes with some baggage if you what to take part in it. We try to make things easier and better to use. I feel we have made that possible with this version of software. We have considerable time and monies invested as well. We offer the forum as a free resource, I sometime think people over look what is provided free of charge without much regard to the value offered to them. Just think, people working for your interests and not charging you anything....Ted J. Welch

We're waiting for the other shoe to drop....... Thanks for all the efforts to improve this forum, really like the pictures, but will have to learn more to make the best use of it. Thanks, Bob P

Ted,
If pictures are easy, I must be doing something wrong. I have tried to do the "link" thing a few times but my big problem is that I only have photo's in "my pictures" files or on a thumb drive as single files. I have not been able to post a string since the system changed.
I can do the "add file" thing in the attachments below this box but can only do one photo at a time then I have to go to "edit" to add an additional photo. I can go the "edit route" for as many as four photos and it has slowed my computed down so much that it "craps" out. Ok based on that, what is easy?
Do you have any suggestions?

First let me say thanks for your open minded and patient response. I do realize that many people seem to be able to navigate and operate everything just fine. For me personally this can become a frustrating experience, which I also realize is no body's intention. As far as the picture thing, I'm having the same problem as Brownie, exactly the same. I have the "add file" box below, but not the image link above. Above, all I have are a bunch of happy faces. I use to be able to change color of text, bold print, etc. All of that is gone now. Is it just me and Brownie? Is this some kind of problem with our personal settings? Similar to my issue with the "sign in again" thing mentioned below? Maybe our settings won't allow the tool bar??
