Fitting 34/35 Headlight Lenses - A Dire Warning !
-
A few weeks back I posted a wanted ad for a replacement headlight lens for my '34 Hudson LTS Series. I also posted a request for tips on how to tackle the tricky task of installing headlight lenses on 34/35 cars. I've got a tip of my own to impart to you now.
A kind HET'er came up with a pair of "generic" replacement lenses that fitted a number of different mid-30s makes including Hudson and I thought my prayer had been answered.
However, disaster struck.
The new lenses were slightly thicker than the old ones and therefore needed a thinner reflector gasket. I didn't appreciate this until I came to put one in. It fractured under virtually no pressure. Using a thinner gasket, the other one went in like a dream.
So, when fitting a new headlight lens whether OEM or not, please take warning and check how thick it is and make sure it's compatible with your reflector gasket. Similarly, if replacing the reflector gaskets, make sure they're no thicker than the original or else you could end up like me !
So, I now have one Tribeam and one generic lens fitted - a rather odd appearance - and I'm back to the drawing board on finding another Tribeam lens or another pair of compatible lenses.
Can anyone helpme find them, please ? Have you a 34 Hudson or Terraplane lens you'll sell me ?
Has anyone used non OEM lenses in their 34 Hudson or Terraplane and what were they actually intended for ?
The dealers are asking prices of $150 - $299 for ONE Tribeam lens, so I'm not intending to submit to that sort of piracy until I've exhausted the other possibilities.
Thanks very much,
David. -

Thank you for that tip.
I emailed him as soon as I read your post.
I'm now waiting to hear from hi. -
Have you tried one of the oldest suppliers in the hobby: http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/partsforsale/hudson/unspecified/1124393.html ?? Headlight Headquarters has had ads in every issue of Hemmings for the the last 50 years I think.

Thank you.
Mr Axelrod was my first port of call when all of this started and I may yet end up buying a lens from him. The problem is, having broken 2 lenses now, I'm windy about spending $150+ to have one break again within seconds
Hence my search for a less expensive option. -

Hi,
Thanks for the tip. The 32 and 33 Terraplane headlight shell aperture is about 1/4" wider than that of the 34 cars, so this lens will be too big to squeeze in but thank you for your help. -
post a pic of the too different sorts you have so we can keep a eye out as sometimes listed as something else

Thank you for the tip-off. I've emailed the seller to check the size of the lenses. If they're for a Hupp W417, the book says they're too small.
-
Sorry David H. to hear your dilemma continues. I think the moral of the story is that you have to find the correct lens for that car... taking in any other lenses that are close, is not good enuf. I spent many many emails back and forth with you concerning how important fit is, and that getting lenses from those that are not knowledgeable can be disasterous.. I know they are expensive, but maybe one day they will show up on ebay..and you will get a bargain.
Good luck in the New Year! -
Logically, you're right.
The problem is that, at the moment, I've got other more pressing demands on my resources (mortgage, grocery bills, etc, etc) and I think I can probably persuade the annual safety check inspector to accept my Tribeam/Twilite lens combo for this year anyway.... fingers crossed !
However, please don't be surprised if I come back to you with a humble request once family finances permit.
Happy 2011 to you !
