Rear Axle Seals for 1928 Essex

    Hi,
Has anyone replaced the felt seals in the rear axle assembly with modern seals?
If so, any part description, sizes etc would be appreciated. Is it worth having the rear wheel bearing caps machined out to allow for a new neoprene seal to stop the grease as suggested by the bearing shop?

    Regards,

If Geoff Clark doesn't know the answer to this then no one does. I suspect you may have already caught up with him as you recognised him in a picture on another post about our Warrnambool Rally.

Seal TC12546 should do the job.

Thanks Geoff I bought them today.

Do you still use felt seals for the outer grease seal?

Yes, felt is fine, as leakage from here is not an issue. providing you don't pump too much grease into the bearing. You can machine out the cap and fit a new modern seal, but not worth the cost really. If you think the felt seal is slack you can shrink it down by inserting a strip of 1/32" gasket paper around the inner surface of the groove. Cut the join at an angle. and make sure the ends just butt together, not overlap. Then when you re-insert the felt seal it will be be a tight fit.
    Geoff.
