Backing up Files
-
Everybody is talking about backing up their files. Even classiccar .com. I am computer STUPID, so how do I do this?
Bob -
Yeah, what he said!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'll be honest -
On classiccar.com: All I had was one PM that I was interested in keeping. I forwarded it to myself, to keep it in my online email account. I deleted everything else, just to keep ahead of any intended upgrades...
A computer: As far as backing-up a computer, there are MANY options, depending on the how much you've got to back up. Among the options:
- A USB type of backup device or hard drive that can be temporarily attached to your PC to backup files to;
- An internet service that you access to backup your files. Many of these type of services offer free backup for the first 1-10 GB of data;
- A tape drive type of system that you connect to your PC to backup your parts of or your complete system. Been done for years, older types of these systems are outdated and aren't large enough to hold today's extreme size of data & files;
- You might also use a NAS device (Network Attached Storage), and use that for storing or backing up files;
- etc..;
Personally - I have a couple of older PCs 'chugging along' in the basement that I've been storing files on for years, and am considering a NAS type of device for storage.
A 'quickie' alternative: In the meantime, I have a couple of USB 'thumb drives' that I back my files up to. Believe it or not, ALL the files, pictures, etc., that I have actually fits on a single 8GB thumbdrive - and I can carry it around in my pocket. Makes for very easy storage and transport of files...
The downside to this - My workplace has disabled all USB storage media out of security concerns (many firms do this now), so I am unable to easily access any of my thumbdrive files from there. -

Bob
Bob, I backed up all my PM's this way.
Go into P M's & choose either "Inbox" or "Sent"(I get into PM's thru the Welcome message)
On the line that says "Messages" (just underneath "Date") check the box to globally select ALL messages (boxes) in your chosen catagory ( In or Out).
Then move your curser to the bottom of the window on your screen & choose the format you prefer for the saved file via the "Download all Private Messages as". I chose "Text" to enable me to read the messages in either "Notepad" or "MS Word" & follow the prompts.
You will need to choose a folder in which to store the PM backup & you also have the ability to name the backup file to a more relevant name as part of the process.
Sorry this is so wordy but it's really easy once you've done it & quite logical.
Good luckDave Y
