Hudson Club
-
Hi
Recieved a phone call sunday from a chapter officer saying I can no longer be a member of the local chapter because the club feels I need to be a member of the national club. Perfect timing of our local meet is in 2 weeks. I read in the bilaws and understand that it is in there. I have not been a member of the National club for my own reasons for many yrs. There is currently over 300 chapter members that are not national members, so they are loosing the potential of about $10,000. they will now loose my chapter dues. I am a silent member and have provided the clutch fluid mugs for them to sell and the 2008 meet magnets to sell and also the 2008 theme mugs upfront to them to sell and only pay me what they sold. I am still setting on a lot of unsold mugs. I sell master cylinders at a heavy discount to club members also. You always get free shipping if a member. about a $9.00 -$12.00 savings to you. they have lost their handouts from me now. Lost a younger member as as well. Laws are made for a reason, enforcing them is another story. For now at least I am allowed on the forum

In your comment you state that laws are made for a reason. I am sure that you understand that the National organization is also controled by the guidelines as they are contained in the National By-laws. All of the local chapters (mine included) were notified and reminded that membership in the National HET is required (by the way, there is no requirement to belong to a local Chapter). One of the issues that requires this is the "blanket" insurance that the National organization has that covers all the members and local chapter activities. Local Chapters do not carry this insurance. This issue alone can be a major issue when it comes to litigation resulting from some type of accident at a tour, show or local chapter meeting.
This is a issue that a number of our members have strong feelings about but I can assure you that without this insurance coverage by the National you are gambling each time you drive your car to a local, regional or National event. This is part of the world that we live in today. My local Hot Rod Club was hit with a one-time car show insurance premium of $4,000. We are now trying to affiliate with a National Club so that we can continue to have our annual car show.
I would not be to hard on our National Leaders. They are only trying to protect the interests of those of us who are members of the HET. And keep in mind that we local members are the ones who approved the National By-Laws and continually force our National Leaders to follow those By-laws. We also have the power to change those By-laws. Sorry that this issue has hit you cross-wise. We old car folks suffer when good folks withdraw their support from our activities. Sponsors do not get enough credit for the support that they give.Brownie -
As Brownie says, insurance coverage is the big issue here. Personally, tho I don't have a Hudson, I feel much more secure knowing that I can go to a local chapter meet and if I'm dumb enough to walk out in front of a moving Hudson I know there is insurance coverage.
On this point, and this point alone, you are doing the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club a grave disservice by being a chapter member and not a national member. You are putting the club in a spot. If you are injured, or your car is damaged, at a local chapter member what are you going to do about it. You probably won't be covered - so are you going to get a lawyer and sue the chapter and club for damages?
I may be wrong, but my feeling is that you, and others, want the goodies, but don't want to pay the freight. You can jump all over me all you want, but I've been a member of this club for 41 years - so I feel that I can say that if you want the chapter, but not the National, then perhaps you should find yourself another club. (These are my thoughts and my thoughts alone - I certainly don't wish to see you leave our great Hudson family). I just wish you'd reconsider and join the full package.
Let me leave you with a little story about why I've been an HET member (and over the years also a member of several chapters) for so many years. In 2007 my marriage of 40 some years finally reached the breaking point and my wife and I were going out separate ways. I was involved in the planning sessions for the 2008 National that was held in Marlborough, MA. At the last planning session I attended, in 2007, a very nice lady came up to me and said "Alex, always remember you have your Hudson family!" For that alone my 41 year membership in the HET club has been priceless and worth every dime.
Please, try to reconsider your reasons for not joining HET and become a member so you can enjoy all the great cars and, especially, the wonderful people.
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr

The Hudson Forum is a non-club forum. The ClassicCar.com forums are open to all, no membership is ever required.
Club memberships are important; however it’s not a fit for everyone for a multitude of reasons. It’s a personal decision whether to join a club or not. There is a limit to how many associations, subscriptions, memberships one person can manage.
On the flip side, organized clubs provide a foot hold on history and do a great job in perpetuating the traditions and history of the cars & trucks we love most.
If we all respect the choices made by ClassicCar.com members, the issue becomes one of how to share the wealth of information out there. -

Ok this insurance you all talk about, when I tripped on a piece of stainless and recieved 7 stitches who's ins. covered it? Mine. When the kid at the show spilled his little red drink on my interior again my ins. when my son got food poisoning from a food vender again my ins covered the emergency room visit. So---- when and where do I make a claim on yours?

A few year ago a local club here in Utah was holding a show. There were around 40 cars with a very open format for the show. It was a hot day and in the early afternoon a person found some shade partially under the running boards of a car. The owner came by a few minutes later and jumped in his car and started to drive off--running over the person. A "big buck" law suit was filed. The local club had no insurance for the show. The lawer named the owner of the park, the club, every menber of the club and all the folks who had filled out an application for the show. The final tally came out to be around $750,000 for each person named on the case. The lawer won his case and the law suits continue to go on.
If you had attended this show--you would now be fighting to keep what little posessions you have. You would be paying for your own lawer and trying to figure out how to save some of the things dear to you. I was not at that show but a few friends of mine were. You should hear the things they say today. One gentleman thinks he will win in the end. He has been in court four times and continues the fight. His legal bills today are more than ten times what most National clubs charge for life membership.
Much like you, I carry insurance to protect me when I take my car out. But I also make sure a few friends join with me and we call it a HET event. I may never need it, but, how do you know with our society today?
This is just one reason I belong to a National. I could take several pages if you wanted to hear more reasons..... By the way, this forum is great!!! However, all it provides is a forum to express thoughts and ideas. Good thing no one comes after us for what we say about a subject or person....Brownie
