Mercury Monterey vs. Mercury Custom

I am trying to id a 1953 Mercury that does not have a VIN plate. The owner thinks that it is a '53 Mercury Monterey, but it does not have the side emblem on the front fender that would indicate that is a Monterey. Without the VIN plate or the side emblem, is there another way to distinguish between a Monterey and a Custom Sports Coupe? Also, what is the difference between the two models? Thanks in advance for the help!

The vin # should be on plate on right front door pillar, (passenger side), just below the upper hinge opening. Somene else may know of other locations.

Unfortunately, the plate is no longer on the car.

As I look at a picture of both cars but of the 1952 variety, I see no difference.

From the Standard Catalog of American Cars:

Custom:The trunk should have a Medallion on it.

Monterey: Two - tone paint, fender skirts and chrome rocker panels were standard. The name was placed on the upper front fenders ( except those built early in the model year )

There may be a big difference inside the car, but nothing is said about that. Have you tried contacting the Mercury Owners Group? If you Google it you should find them. I'm sure they will know. I'm also thinking there may be a stamped number on he chasis, possibly in the engine compartment on the frame.

Thanks for info! I will have to ask the seller to look at the chasis. I didn't think about the Mercury owners group, but that's a great idea!!

I believe that the Custom series was the low line of cars, sedans and one wagon only, and the Monterey had all body styles. Originally the Monterey was the name applied only to the 2dr hardtop coupe.

Thanks for the info everyone. The VIN # was stamped on the chassis. Now...is there a way to decode it?

Very easy to do if you've got the shop manual or the parts book for this car, they have all the codes in them however, the VIN no will only tell you the year, engine, and assembly plant for your car, as I recall.

What do you have for a number?

Maybe I can find something in the material I have.
