Parts worth saving from "the crusher?!"
-
I found a '52 Super Six or Commodore that's sitting in a junk yard and could be days (weeks at the most) away from meeting it's ultimate fate with "the crusher". Fortunately, most usable parts have been stripped by someone else who told me of the remaining hulk (it's pretty well rusted out). I checked it out and found the only things worth saving are the generator, starter, 262 head (removed and sitting on top of the engine-water in the cylinders) and the exhaust-intake manifold. Unfortunately, the junk yard is charging modern day prices for these parts. For example, they want $35.00 + tax for the generator or starter. Each of which seems to need to be rebuilt. The head, cast iron, is $55.00. The best deal may be the exhaust-intake manifold (single carb) for which they want $85.00. I don't need any of these parts myself (I have a spare intake-exhaust manifold), but for the "sake of the club" I thought maybe I should perhaps take the exhaust-intake manifold to sell at a local Hudson meet. Any suggestions? By the way, the front and rear curved glass windows are intact, but slightly "fogged" at their bottoms.

IMHO the head is worth more than the intake/exhaust manifolds, superg; those wide-block 262 heads work well on a 308, and the price is okay. The exhaust manifold would be nice for someone with a cracked example, but with what the yard wants for them you won't have much/any "margin" left. You didn't mention if the tranny is there, or if the dash gauges/chrome/interior trinkets are useable. The grille and front clip would be other pieces to save. These are all the same as found on a Hornet.Workin Stiff -
The "trinkets" such as the door handles, window cranks, gauges, radio are all gone. The transmission with OD is probably still there, but it'll cost around $150.00 - $200.00 not to mention the removal fee. The front clip is intact, but, "you really gotta' want it" to go through the trouble to remove it properly. By the way, I thought the 232 wide head is desirable on a 308 for extra power. I should mention this Hudson is located at the Victory Auto Salvage Yard in Bensenville, IL (about a half mile south, as the crow or airliners fly, from Chicago's O'Hare Field Airport). Those of you in the Chicago area feel free to "have at it!"

Thanks for the contact info... should help someone in your area. Sounds like there are still lots of good parts there. OD trannies are getting harder to find, especially the two-lever style. It should be worth at least $250-300 if it isn't broken. The 262 head will give a nice streetable compression bump on a 308, but a 232 head can give you predetonation fits without premium fuel or a deep block relief. I wouldn't mind paying $75.00 for a wide 262 head myself if it was local.Workin Stiff
