'38 112 Convertible Update
-
We had to change the angles on the gas tank brackets from the original tank. This caused the felt to pull away from the brackets when we tightened up the bolts. The pictures show some scrapping on the tank and a little excess felt over the side of the brackets. I will touch up the tank and trim this excess material of the brackets. Just wanted to get pictures up as quickly as I could.

dave kastelic wrote:Thanks you for your comments guys. I feel like I have to make a comment regarding Jason's post. Junior is not doing the restoration for me. I have been working hand and hand with him throughout the entire work for about one year now. I always give Junior all the credit he deserves and it is his knowledge that is making this work possible. However, I am quite sure, as Rick knows, that he will tell anyone interested that I have been right there with him the entire way.
Dave,
You're doing a terrific job! Keep up the good work (and pics).
Kevin C. -
Thank you Kevin. I will post all pictures that I think are helpful.
-
Got the rear inside of the car painted.

Looks great, Dave. Y'all are really movin' right along.
-
Thanks Russell. We are going to take two weeks off so there will not be any more pictures for a while. First of all I will be in Seattle this coming week watching my son play in the US Amateur. Wish him luck. Junior will be away at a couple car shows the following week. After that we will be right back at it again.
-
Back in the sadle in regards to the car. Will try to get a few pictures up next week.
-
Look forward to them! When can we go for a ride?
-
How about a Christmas trip down the road Russell? If you can make it over here I promise you the first ride ( along with Rick and Park ). If Jack Miller can make it as well he would be given the honor of being the first to drive it out of the garage. Dave
-
Sounds like a plan. I forget where you are, Dave . . . is it in SC?

Hickory, North Carolina Just 45 minutes NW of Charlotte

If anyone knows where I can get a clock that fits my '38 dash please let me know. Thanks

Shucks - Saw a described 'NOS' one from the late 30's go on eBay around a month ago...
I'll keep an eye open -
December might seem like a long way off, but before we know it - it will be upon us!
-
Picture of the new cover for the opening on the underside of the body above the rear end. Also a couple pictures of the motor with red paint on "Terraplane".

I like it. I painted the "HUDSON" on my 8 cyl and to me it adds to that good old engineering. hehe
-
Have a little patience. Will get up some updated pictures in the next few days.
-
That engine looks beautiful! One thing you might consider on the fuel line
plumbing tho. My stepdown came to me hardlined from the tank to just before the pump and eventually failed the solder joint on the pickup where it enters
the tank. Even the shortest length of rubber hose will go a long way toward
reducing stress on the hardline fittings that happen over time. I love watching this come together as inspiration for my 30 Essex project. -
Thanks Dave for sharing your amazing restoration. Last week I was down a little because I want to work on my 54, got a 53 for parts and do not even have a garage. Have to rent two and one is 150 km away. Here in Quebec, no Hudson can be found anywhere. So, I must consider myself to be very lucky to have two. Could not take the chance to miss it. But looking at all the pictures and all the comments, I feel quite better now. I will take it one day at a time and check all I have to do before beginning so as to be ready. And when I will begin, I am sure there will be a bunch of Hudson Guys to comment and help. Thanks again Dave and keep up posting the pics!
-
It took me a couple of days but I got a picture of the gas line a little to the side of the gas tank. You can see a piece of rubber hose about 4" long. This piece was put on to take some of the pressure off the steel line. Their is no solder at the tank. The line is bolted to the tank. Thanks for your comment.

Looking good Dave! Mine (at least the one I plan on putting into my '39) is a floor shift model. Essentially, just remove four bolts, and put on the shift lever.
I haven't quite got those two shift 'lockouts' (left and right side) completely figured out though. Think the transmission that was in my '39 is ok, although I can't get it out of gear - think the lockout is preventing it from coming out of gear.
Luckily, I have 3 identical transmissions to 'play with', eventually marrying one of them to the '54 232 engine. Got to get the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc., checked-out and rebuilt.
So much for my challenges
... Your build is coming along very nicely - -
Rick, have the clutch ready to go. Have it soaking in oil for two days and will have it ready to put into place this week.
-
Finished most of the "woodgrain" work on the dash. Applied a brown base coat. Then sanded the shine of the next day. Applied a coat of Min-wax mahogoney gel with a 1" brush laid flat against the metal. Then applied two coats of clear the following day. Buffed it out to a shine. Still have to do some more buffing before it is finished.

A couple more pictures. Sorry the "look" of the woodgraining is not showing real good on the pictures. It is much more pronounced than it appears.

Looks really good, Dave!
Are you going to paint the steering column with the same brown base coat or something different?
Keep up the good work and the pics!
Kevin C. -
I "woodgrained" the steering wheel. The steering column got chromed. Little expensive but really looks good.
-
Wow Dave ; that looks great!
Hopefully I can get my '39 to look as good
-
Wow what a plain looking Dash Hudson had then. You got to admire simplicity sometimes though. On a dash like that woodgrain adds to it.
-
The dash in the car was "woodgrained" when I got it. Actually, my '38 Sedan parts car also had a woodgrained dash. We cleaned them up back to the bare metal and went from there to where it is now. Again, I wish my camera picked a better image of the dash. The picture shows the shine but not too much of the "look". As always, thanks for your comments.
-
Sorry I have not shown any pictures lately. My computer went kaboom and I cannot get any pictures up. Got the motor and trannie put on the frame today and have made quite a bit of other progress. Will get some updated pictures up in the next few days. Dave
-
Dave-
Do you have one of these all ready?:

Awesome! Fantabulous! Inspiring! That engine looks especially sweet sitting in the frame, and good thing those lenses cleaned up that well, huh? Looks like you just might make that Christmas deadline, Dave. Great work, keep it up. I know you are really going to be proud of this one. Heck, I'm proud for 'ya!
-
Thanks Russell. Soaked the lenses in white vinegar for about 20 hours and then scrubbed them down. They came out pretty clear. Dave
-
As we'd say in the UK Dave - that looks absolutely cracking! :cheer:
Really coming together nicely now. -
Thank you for your comment Paul. Unfortunately I broke my heel Monday so it looks like I will not be able to work on the car for several weeks. The plans were to get the fenders and grille on this week. That is obviously not going to happen for a while now. Dave
-
Sorry to hear that you're laid up for a while... Try to stay off your foot, at least as long as the doctor says - these things are not 'fun' at any age, and especially now, since we're no longer 'young bucks' (at least in my case...).dave kastelic wrote:Thank you for your comment Paul. The car will be there waiting for you -
-
Looks like I might get by without surgery Rick. Doc said it would take about 12 weeks to heal. Scheduled to get a 3D x-ray tomarrow to give him a little better look at the area that was damaged. Dave
-
Sorry to hear about that Dave. Do as the Doc says, and stay off of it for as long as they say. You don't want any future problems with it, and the car will be there when you're ready to get back on it. Speedy recovery to 'ya!!
-

Hi Dave,
Sorry to hear that - not a nice place to have a break.
Hopefully it will all heal nicely and you'll be back in the garage real soon!
Paul -
Junior got the front fenders on without my help yesterday. I have no idea how he was able accomplish it without my help but he got it done. Will try to get by the shop today and take a few pictures. Dave
-
Dave,
I always look forward to your updates(pics), but please be careful. Four weeks ago a friend fell and broke his right heel. While using crutches, he went to let his dog outside and fell and tore his right rotator cuff and bicep. He now faces a a painful surgery and rehab.
Please be careful!!!
Kevin C. -
I may have missed the message about how you broke your heel, but read most of your thread, please let us know how you did it. Short version. Thanks, Bob P.
-
dave kastelic wrote:Thanks for the advice Kevin. I am trying to be careful but I am not real good with the crutches. Anyway, here are a few new pictures. I know the horns are reversed but this will be taken care of shortly. Dave
Dave,
Loking better and better! I have to say the pictures you have posted and continue to post really do paint a great "history" of the work you have done on the car.
Must be a book in there somewhere
Paul -
Dave asked me to try to consolidate his picture posts, so here goes -

Sorry for the poor coloring. When I take the picture inside the garage the color shows up yellow. When I am standing outside the ivory shows much better.

I picked up my radio from the local TV/Radio repairman today. Will try to get a picture of it up in a day or so. He turned it on
believe it or not it works great. He converted it to 12 volt, changed out the antenna plug to a standard plug in and charged nothing more than a hand shake. I told him I would give him a prominent place in my restoration album. -
Both bumpers are now on the car. Will now try to get my helper to get the guards on.DSCN0362.JPG800 x 600 - 34K
