old gasoline
-
I am restoring a 1964 Ford Fairlane. It has old gasoline in the tank and system. I will need to clean all of this out and flush and inspect the lines and tank but what do I do with the old gasoline that is in there? Are there facilities that will take old fuel?
The gas has been in there about five years.
Thanks, Donald -
When I lived in Chicago, I could take that stuff to a company called SafetyClean.
Do you have any hazardous waste sites in your area? They will take it.
Ron -
Hi Ron. Thanks again for the great response. I hadn't thought of a waste facility but it does make sense. I'll try to find one in my area. Thanks also for being so willing to reply with great info. Helps people like me to have someone who has done a lot of this stuff before. One of the first things I am going to do after evacuating the fuel system is replace the valve seals. I have found a good site that explains how to do it.
Then I want to rebuild the carb. Then... well you know how it goes. The start of a long project of TLC.
I can hardly wait to take it to my first car show!

No problem Don,
I have to ask ........ Why are you going to replace the seals? Is oil getting past them?
You shouldn't have any problem getting a carb kit for it. Just be sure tha you get a good one. If you need any diagrams let me know, I may have some.
I had a chance to get a 64 Fairlane a while back that was a clean car and a convertable. I'm really sorry I didn't get it. I have to sell my Cutlass before I do anything. I better put it up for sale and see what happens.
Are you going to clean the tank yourself? Replace any fuel lines? Rebuild the pump?
Sounds like a nice car. Best of luck with it.
Ron -
Hi Ron. Yes, I think some oil is getting by the seals. When I drove it last it would smoke some during acceleration and then clean up. Then after sitting a spell at idle, it would repeat the process. Even though it has only 70K original miles on it, the valve seals are most likely bad. At least I will start there and see what happens.
I plan to totally clean out the fuel system. The tank has already been removed and serviced inside but that was a while ago and may need it again.
The gas has been in there a while. The only good thing is that it is being stored in my mom's garage in Arizona out of the elements. At least it is dry there.
Donald.
