If it wasnt for bad luck....:mad:
Putting the finishing touches on reassembling everything on my 36T and just as I am finishing the top bolts on the intake manifold~~"SNAP"~~ cracked on of the ears! OOHH, gee whiz, darn and a couple others....
Can this be tig welded? It seems cast to me. Anyone know a good welding/fabricating shop here in Kitsap County Washington? Or even Tacoma I guess? Or do I try to replace it?

Call around to the local welding shops and ask them if they can braze the ear back on the manifold. A competent welder should be able to handle this and it shouldn't cost much.
You still might want to keep an eye out for a "backup" manifold at swap meets especially if your existing manifold has been resurfaced.

Jeff, it looks like you didn't have the proper space between the exhaust and intake. A new intake gasket and a new gasket in between the int.&exh. The exhaust manifold is also probably etched away causing a gap wider than the gasket will take up. It looks like it has been leaking prior to taking it apart?. After repairing the cracks,verify the gap before tightening it again. Hope this helps. -
You should be able to have it welded. When I bought my '36T many years ago, it had a bad crack in the intake manifold and I took it to a competent welder and it held until I replaced it with a different one when I rebuilt the engine years later. In fact I still have it and the weld is fine. Too bad that it cracked, I am sure that is a disapointment!

Yes Kevin, I called one of my local shops and took it to him. He said he can do it and probably about $80. Seemed like a bit to me but he will bead it to get paint all off and then brass it in and smooth it so we will see.
And Clutch guy, yes it was leaking a bit. Put new gaskets on but as it showed the one wasnt thick enough. How the heck do I measure the gap between the two?

Take a straight edge and see how low the corner is. If its more than say .015, you could build up the low surface with weld. If its less ,you could spot in the whole surface. Either way, its going to have to be spotted in. Otherwise you can be sure the same thing is going to happen again. Gaskets just won't make up the difference.
You can measure by bolting up the intake and leaving the damaged area undone, Use feeler gauges to measure the gap. Jim
