Hydramatic Transmission

My 1955 Olds Super 88 has the hydramatic. It was rebuilt a long time ago when I first started working on the car. It shifts fine. Recently, I am getting a vibration from 33 to 35 mph. It is dependent on road speed as I can make it do it in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. It will also do it without the drive shaft in the car. Where should I start looking for the problem?

Engine vibrations are about impossible to try to diagnose over the internet. If i'm not mistaken, Hydromatics did have a problem on that line but I would not think of saying that is the problem without checking the car. You would do good to find someone that underastands these transmissions to check it.

Could it be an ignition problem (fouled plug or bad wire?) or is it an engine problem (bad harmonic balancer or sticky or burnt valve?)

Get yourself a manual for the car if you are going to work on it. It will be the best investment you can make and they have a lot of checks in them to do.

I appreciate the input. Harmonic balancer or engine missing would explain the vibration if it occurred at a certain rpm. It doesn't. It is dependant on the output shaft speed of the transmission. I do have a manual and the engine is running fine. Where else could it be but in the transmission? Vibration is still there without a prop shaft in. Mounts are newwer too. Anyone else???
