I have a 1971 cougar that hasnt run in a few years and I am trying to get it running again. It has a 351 C with 2brl carb.
I replaced the coil, the distributor cables, spark plugs and rebuilt the carb. I dont have a battery for it yet so I took one out of my 91 Jeep Cherokee (straight 6 engine).
I put the battery in and hooked it up and got power to the instrument panel, the oil and alternator lights come on. I turn the key and it will crank but will not start. I smell fuel in the carb so I know it isnt a fuel problem.
So I checked the plugs. The plugs are not getting a spark. I checked the distributor and it isnt getting a spark either. Is the brand new coil I bought a bad coil that needs to be replaced or is the battery I have in there too weak to spark it or what. I dont know how to fix this problem.
Any help would be great. Thanks. -
Have you checked the points (condition and gap) ?
Put a test light on the positive side of the coil and witht the ignition key on it should light.
Put the test light on the negative side of the coil and crank the engine. The test light should flash. If not, you have a probable malfunction in the points.
A place to start at least.
