1962 Impala 4dr hardtop help

    Greetings,

I have a 1962 Impala 4r hardtop with an unoriginal 350 engine in it.

I am having trouble keeping it running, the only way i can get it to start is to spray starter fluid in to the carb.

Then after i get it to start it lets loose an ungodly amount of white smoke literally to the point of having to turn the car off or i would die.

I have no Mechanical experience with cars,I am a computer guy,

I found a few post about similar problems but am not sure how to apply them to my situation and some of the technical terms confuse me.

Getting the car to start and stay running smoothly is my main concern i will need to get the dash electronics hooked up but that will come later.

(the guy i bought it from left the dashboard a mess i have a bunch of bulbs and knobs hanging from underneath and i have no clue what they are, what they do or where they go.)

If anyone can offer help i would greatly appreciate it like i said overall help would be nice but my main goal is to just to be able to start it smooth and keep it that way then i will move on to the rest.

Oh i have an edlebrock carb i think it is a 4 barrel iam not sure how to identify the model of the carb, and i have a LOT of gas poring into the carburator and around it and it is so bad it is pooling on the engine block. If i need to provide more information please let me know this is my dream car and i would love to have it up and running when I get out of college. my email is kazuma080@live.com

Fuel leakage is the number one priority. Many a car have started on fire due to leaking carbs. I would suggest that you have it rebuilt before doing any other work.

White smoke is generally caused from water getting into the cylinders and being burned with the combustion. It could be a bad head gasket, cracked head or block.

It sounds to me like you need more professional help. Have you asked around at local reapir facilities what they may charge to help you out?

I have but no one really wants to tackle that kind of job right now. They keep telling me they don't have time to do a job that big, plus I want to really get this car going myself i want to learn how to mechanic a bit. But when I step back and look at it I think i may have bit off more than I can chew. But I will get the carb rebuilt, I do appreciate you getting back with me, honestly though if i can get picutres posted on my thread and you can look at them and give an opinion to weather or not i should get some professional help. Thank you Ron

I agree with Oldcar Mechanic. Get the carb rebuilt before anything else to lessen the chance of losing the car to a fire. It does sound as if you could definitely use professional help with the car, especially with all the wiring issues with it. You could also cause a fire in the car trying to work on that.

'62 Impalas are nice cars and I wish you the best with it.

Pictures are a big help. Post some of the problems that you have.

Rebuilding a carb is not all that hard to do. The thing is, you need to get a good quality kit and read the directions a couple of times, and all of them. Lay the parts out in a neat order as you take them off as it aids putting things back together. Clean them carefully and completely. Spray carb cleaner through ALL the pasageways so you know they are clean. It's a good learning experience for sure.

Take your time with things and think them all out.
