Carb. Problems on my 289 V8
-
Hi everyone, My name is Andrew, I currently picked up a 1964 Studebaker Commander with a 289 V8 in it. Not a Ford 289. Studebaker 289 with a Stromberg single barrel carb on it. Now the problem I keep having with it, is that the carb keeps leaking gas out of the bottom on the left side onto the intake manifold. I have fixed the float about two times, and when we did fix it, the car would run perfect for a few days maybe two weeks at the most, then the carb would mess up again.
Does anyone know where I can get a new float or is it something else?
Im not sure what is exactly wrong with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time -
It sounds like you have a sinking or heavy float or a leaking neddle and seat. I would recommend rebuilding the carb. I think youcan still buy those carb cleaner tank and baskets from auto parts stores. They are not as potent as the people that rebuild carbs for a living have but it will do the job. Be sure to blow out every passage inside before you re-assemble it.
What type of float does it have? You can take the float out and put it in a tub of water to see if it allows water to seep into it if it's a brass one. Or you can see if it sinks if it's a composite one.
The carb may just need a real good thorough cleaning.
