1953 Pontiac Chieftain Engine swap?
-
I'm debating picking up a 1953 Chieftain for a restoration. It's all intact, original glass, trim, and interior is all there. But it's missing an engine. What can I swap into it with reasonable ease that would work? I was considering a 454 or 455, but I'm open to all ideas. I'm on a budget and would love to get it driving as I work on the paint situation. I found a 455 w/ tranny for $600 locally, in fact they're all in that price range. Are there any swap kits available in terms of motor mounts and such? I've never done an engine swap. The tranny is still in the Chief I think, but hasn't been touched in 20 years. I'd prefer something that doesn't get 6 mpg. The car weighs around 3,400 I believe.
Any help regarding things to look for or engine ideas would be appreciated.

I have a 55 that I put a 400 in... I think the 455 would be a great choice for you in the area you are looking. I don't know of any conversion kits, I used the front motor mount and then had to weld in others and used 76 Firebird mounts to the custom brackets for the sides. The brackets for the mounts are more or less jsut a flat peice of metal with braceing. it's a little work but the rewards are well worth it. good luck
