12V Starter for Flathead 6
-
Will a 58 230 flathead starter motor (12V) bolt up to and work on a 54 230ci (converted to 12V)? Both automatics.

Usually not, past experience with Chevies and Plymouths taught me that on these two makes the starter pinion was a smaller diameter and the flywheel ring gear was a larger diameter on a 12 volt system. A 12 volt starter bolted onto a 6 volt car will NOT engage the flywheel. Most 12 volt conversions use the 6volt starter as is. Starter is only used for a few seconds at a time.

While most 6 volt starters will work on 12 volts, it does shorten the life expectancy of the starter. I know guys that have run 12v on a 6v starter for years then again, I know some that didn't make it 6 months. It is not that expensive to have the starter rewound for 12v then you can rest easy.
