Tucker that got away
-
One day the subject of the Tucker car came up and Dad chimmed in with his story. As the story goes after the war everyone was buying new cars. He liked everything about the Tucker and was discribing how well it handled and all the features about it. He had gone as far as putting a $50 dollar deposit on one to buy, as soon as one became available. Before he got his Tucker, the company folded. I don't remember if he got his $50 back but he still had glowing reports about decades later.
The new car Dad ended up buying was clear at the opposite end of the auto market. It was a brand spanking new green, 50 MPG compact car, the great 1947 CROSLEY sedan.

Back in about 1984 I was helping out at the annual Greenberg's AMC/Hudson car show in Anoka (MN) when we had a Tucker in the host dealer's showroom. The late owner of a vintage-car junkyard named Whitey's Auto Salvage had loaned it to us for the show. It was a running, driving example in pretty good shape... I believe it was taupe-colored. Someone at the show asked him if he would ever sell it, and he said sure... for $250,000. We all thought he was nuts for wanting that much.
As I remember it, Bruce Morrie-Kubo (sp?) had his Hornet at the same show. I've got pictures of all this that I need to find a way to scan and post.Workin Stiff -
Interesting story. Did he sell the Tucker? I would like to see the pictures you have.
I have only seen one Tucker and it was in a museum. It would be neat to actually see one driven.

I assume the car was sold sometime before 2000 when the owner passed away. I'll have to look closer at the pictures... there was a show plaque made up with info about the car, and I snapped a photo of it. It may have the VIN number listed. Plans are for the purchase of a flat-scanner with my tax return. I could post the pictures then... as well as some of the hundreds of slide images my Grandpa took. He once owned a '49 Commodore 6 sedan as well as a '53 Hornet sedan with the Twin-H & Hydro.Workin Stiff -

I drove one. Similar to driving a Hudson, but not quite as good as a Hudson.
