Radio installation on a 72 Monte Carlo
-
Hey all,
I have a fully restored 72 Monte Carlo, and the tape deck just went out so I took the opportunity to replace the "original" dash speakers and just bought a regular Kenwood MP242 audio deck. I have a DieHard Platinum P3 battery (because sucking 1/3 a gallon per start up is not cool anymore).
Few questions for those who know more about wiring than I do (which is minimal).
I'm obviously going to undermount it and am struggling to find an easy path to the fuse box which is buried DEEP inside of the dash. I have a temp guage and a psi gauge that the previous owner put in before I bought it. Are there any work-arounds or do I just have to gut the entire dash? Or, the most important, can I just run a hardwire straight from the battery to the deck so I don't have to screw with the fuse box?
After that can I just strip some of the sheathing off the ignition switch and wrap the wire around that or is there some magic special way I need to work it?
Thanks in advance! -
when it comes to after market radios...If you pull the original out, I just use the old hot wire from the original radio (that is what I did). If not and you are doing an under dash mount there are a couple of ways to go (easy ways) one is to splice in to the hot wire of the existing radio. short and sweet and already hooked into the ignition. just don't turn on both radios at the same time (don't know why someone would) or you will blow the fuse. the other way is to forget the ignition and like you said just run a wire straiht to the battery. you can make that look clean by following the existing harness as far as possible. Hope this helps.
