1941 110 blue oil smokes at startup only

Has a 6 cylinder with good compression and idles and runs perfectly, except on first start up after sitting over night. It will then blow a large cloud of blue smoke for 5 minutes, and then not any more while driving or upon starting later in the day. the next day same cloud. Has a single action fuel pump and is not an oil bath air cleaner (it is the pot scrubber matl type which you apply oil to the surface. Although I keep it dry)
Where can this oil be coming from? :confused: Thanks for answers. Philsr -
Probably the old style cast iron oil scraper rings have lost their tension. When cold, they don't wipe the oil off the cylinder walls, thus the oil gets pumped up past the compression rings on the intake stroke, then burned on the power stroke. When the piston and the oil control rings warm up, they expand and start wiping the oil off, thus the smoking subsides. Funny that it takes a Hudson guy to answer your Packard question. Is there much differenece between the engines of that era? Just looking to understand, I would like to know.

In all honesty, none whatsoever. I've owned both and a Packard straight eight is built pretty much like a Hudson 6, only with 2 more cylinders.
And I apologize I didn't get here sooner, I was drooling over a Studebaker......:eek::rolleyes: -

What model were you looking at?
I have a good friend that has a Hawk and the President of a club around Chicago.

A Lark. I've decided that I need a little hotrod so I'm looking for a 2 door Lark. Preferably a '59-'61, but I'm not too picky. Has to be a V8 though.

Why do you stop at 61? Isn't the body style the same through 63? The Lark VIII would be nice in a 2 dr. hardtop. I had a six cylinder 4 dr. sedan when I was a kid back in 63.
I saw a convertible about a year ago at an auction. What a cool car.
What is your plan?

I like the taillights of the '61 and back cars, the '62-'63 with the round taillights don't do much for me, nor the quad headlights.
The plan is, a 289 out of a '57 Packard Clipper, supercharged, with a 5 speed and a posi rear. That's what I'd want for my car. The wife wants a Lark convertible, same years, (for the same aesthetic reasons) also 289 V8, auto, a/c, etc. I prefer the two door post cars, as they look as innocent as they come, and thus a "sleeper".

As innocent as they come.. hehehehehe.. -

If the rings were recently replaced and the compression rings installed upside down (if applicable) then good compression will obtain but the blue smoke on start up and oil consumption will happen too. This happened to me recently.
Also, the two stage fuel pump could be the culprit if it is tied into the intake manifold.
