Major Rant

Well, I'm not into street rods.
(The worst thing I've done is put a 254 in a 46 truck with a 49OD, that had a blown 212 when I got it.)
..but I browsed the rod sub-forum t'other day and there were several posts that should have been in the regular forum, and there are always posts in the regular forum that are strictly rod related.
Then poor Jon has to move em around to get 'em where they oughta be.
Now, I just browsed the rod posts, and there are a lot of good ideas and tech stuff that I can put to good use, and there aren't enough strictly rod-related stuff that would muck up the normal forum that I couldn't deal with.
Also, the Rod section and the Rant section have nice little 'Classic Cars' logos that look like that's the only place to go, cornfusing some of us apparently.
#1, I'm for combining the whole thing. Even most of the rants are well taken, and steam must be blown off occasionally.
#2 At least combine the Regular and Rod section so we can all benefit from each other.
Having ranted, I do appreciate this forum, and all the hard work that goes into it, and check it every day.
And pontificate occasionally!

I just went back to the first page of the street rod section, and it started in October 2005 (I'd have said 3 years ago if asked, but what's time to a geezer?). There were (are) some really rabid "keep it stock" folks who were making very divisive comments about street rod stuff, no matter what the modification. So they split the street rodders off to their own forum, so the people who got so hot and bothered could simply ignore them. Ditto the Discussion forum a couple years later.
I think its been a pretty good compromise- if seeing something about chopping a brougham is going to send you're blood pressure through the roof, just don't look. I agree that some of the best tech stuff is on the street rod forum, and always go there whenever something new is posted.
As to the problem of guys putting general interest stuff on the specialized forums, the administrator and others are pretty good about pointing it out so the guy re-posts on the General board.
Guess I'd be in favor of status quo- in the interest of brotherly love. Lets all join in a chorus of Kumbaya.

I go both ways. I love the original and I seem to always have some type of hot rod in the shop. I am building one each at the present time. Join them or not join them is not a big deal to me and if asked I'd keep things the way that they are. For me I do not see this as a "Major" rant. This is more like a "Captain" rant? But then again, what do I know? The last person that posted feedback for me stated that I only like to hear myself talk.....Brownie

I started out " keep it stock " but got covered up dollarwise, my car was used as a parts car by several people before I got it -so it wasnt like I modified a decent car, everything I did do can be returned to stock and I had all the stuff laying I put on it, Id still dont like to see someone modifying a decent Hudson that is real restoreable!!

Hi Uncle Josh,
You have to remember we are a creative bunch. It's in our genes to create especially me since I have always been an Artist. When I did my first couple of posts on the forum when there was just one heading I was severely and I felt brutally chastised by some (Hudson) people for wanting to alter my Hudson. You would have thought I had raped the Queen Mother herself. I enjoy having both headings since it's just a simple matter of pressing a computer key to get from one to the other. I read both daily. For the other guys, my advice is that it's like having porn on the web. If it offends you Don't go there!
P.S. I enjoy beautifully restored cars! Mine just doesn't happen to be one of them.

I'm thinkin' like Brownie--I love 'em BOTH!
Hell, we're talkin' about clicking a mouse! I like keeping up with the regular crowd in the HUDSON section, viewing cars, listening to ones woes, etc.
I also happen to enjoy the many creative, free-thinking and original ideas of the "Hot Rod" bunch. What a bunch of talented people in BOTH categories!
Being a HET member for over thirty years has seen both sides to the Stock vs. Modified argument. There simply is no answer to the problem. It certainly helps to have a thick skin on both sides!
Having two categories gives most everyone the best chance to "ease" the pain of argument.

I remember Milwaukee,1981 when I was cussed for having a 289 Ford in my car, this was just after I made a cross country trip hauling a trailer behind it. 1983 in Iowa city there was another 33 Terp 8 that was restored?, mine still had more original parts in it. Street is neat,plus more good looking women around. Now its back to 1955 specs. like it was when I got it from my uncle. I like anything that pop's, bang's or moves.

I've always maintained this attitude toward street rods, modifieds, whatever. For one thing it is a part of our car heritage. The first street rod was probably some youngster who took the fenders off his car way back when.
For another I know of several Hudsons that were modified simply because the new owner didn't know about the club (back in the days before internet) and didn't know where to find parts - which leads to my final conclusion.
Two parts actually - first even modified it's still moving on down the road, not crushed in a junk yard. Second man pays his money for a car - bottom line it's his car and he can damn well do what he wants with it (tho pink with purple polka dots might be pushing it!!!
)
Finally all I ask of a modifier is that you do it in such a way that at some point down the highway it can be brought back to original condition without to much trouble and hassle.
As far as I'm concerned any Hudson, original or street rod, is welcome.
Quick little story: I knew a fellow that had a step-down and he was a rabid anit-modifier. I know on one occasion he walked up to somebody and told them he couldn't talk to them about their Hudson because it was modified. At a meet one time I was looking at this fellows Hudson and told him it was modified. Well, he just about came unglued. He sputtered for a while and then asked me what was I talking about. I told him he didn't have spark plugs with the Hudson logo on them, so he must have a modified Hudson.
Guy didn't talk to me for six months.

I'm all for both, always have been. Grew up at the dragstrip and around hot rods. Most of my buddies away from the Hudson club are hot rodders.
An interesting point that hasn't been brought up (I think), is that as time goes by, it gets more and more difficult to bring back to original. Original parts become more and more scarce every day. When the demand exceeds the supply, the prices go up and the average individual will not be able to afford to put his car back original.
Case in point is the convertible I'm currently restoring back to, oh, say 95% original. My best guess is that if I weren't trying to keep it so original and made more concessions, it would likely cost me about half as much as it is.
The days of finding a long lost derelict out on Farmer Brown's back 40 are still alive and well and the young guy who wants to be involved in cars are way more likely to rod that old Hudson and do it in an affordable way than try to "restore" it. I think no one should be chastised for their efforts, but rather congratulated. It takes all of us to make the old car hobby go 'round. -

Yes, but not daily, like on the main board. Lately, and with the holidays, just haven't had the time. Always look forward to the topics brought up here, though.
