Was wondering if my y-block air filter has to have a oil bath or can i use a modern air filter and no oil for the new filter? What purpose does the oil serve?

You can use any air fliter and canister that will fit the top of the carb.

Here is a picture of an oil bath air cleaner. The air flows throught the canister and when it makes the U-turn to go back up to get to the carb throat the oil at the bottum of the can will catch most of the debris. It was fairly effective until they found a batter way.
