1974 pontiac catalina
-
my friend just sold me his 74 pontiac catalina coupe. It has a 400 in it, original everything, 80k miles. I want to make it fast, right now its pretty slow, my explorer 5.0 beats it. What can I do with this car? I was going to start with a 4 barrel carb but is it even worth my time to do work on? Are there any sweet crate motors that would fit or any crate motor websites that are good? Can I slap different heads on it? I want this thing to move without spending too much cash

i think a place called butler performance is a pontiac engine builder or get the tri power manifold andcarb set up for the pontiac, probably the cheapest upgrade.

I've been rebuilding my 1970 Catalina with a 400 for about a year now and find it pretty versitle. I've replaced the original intake manifold with an aluminum edlebrock performer and swaped the 2 barrel for a 4 barrel Rochester Quadrajet. Headers can be pricey, since for my model they have to be custom made? In the meantime I ran custom dual exhaust off the existing heads with the dual chambered thrust mufflers and sounds really good. Im still tweaking and have no idea what gains in performance I've created? However swapping the manifold and carb. alone was the differance between night and day. Im currently in the process of researching and upgrading my ignition to HEI. and that may add some benefit?
Im not looking for huge huge gains, but as the engine was original when I picked it up and slowwww, Im pretty satisfied with not having to drop the cash on a crate motor and still eneded up with pretty good performance.
