rare '39 CC8 cp. on eBay
-
consigned a few days ago a very rare '39 CC8 Victoria coupe which has jump seats that face each other & a pivoting front seat.
It's here in Az. & saw it many years ago when it was at Al Saffrahn's shop in Chandler (he's since moved to Maricopa). Still in original owning family & has nearly reached it's "Buy it Now" price.
If interested take a look at the pics, esp. of the rear compartment. -
I later bought a partially restored '39 CC8 cp. like this one exc. it was a business coupe which does not have a pivoting front seat, which is fixed in the bus. cp., & has a package panel. These were sometimes referred to as "salesman's coupes".

A lot of cracking in the steering wheel -

-
Rick - thanks so much for posting those pics, esp. of the rear "Victoria coupe" compartment.
-
What a sweet car. I wish my roadster was this far along and this nice.... I hope it stays local, I would love to see it in person.Brownie

The tail lamps shown in those pictures were only used here in Australia on the 1938 Terraplanes, we had the tear drop lamps for ALL 1939 Hudsons did not matter if it was an 8 cyl or a 6 cylinder.
That sure is a beautiful motor car. -

These tail lamps are the same as on my 39 convertible. They were used on the coups and convertibles for 39. -
Sweet car!! I like the jump seats in the rear, perfect for two little boys!!
Hey Pete! What's up with your avatar? I like this one better than the last one. LOL! -
Wow! Met the reserve already, with 7 days to go. I wonder if they are interested in a trade straight across? LOL

Never have seen what the rear seats look like. I needed that for my 40 Victoria model 44 coupe.
-
Russell - prior avatar was of '35 Railton drophead I have now, current one of a '36 "sportsman's coupe" (expensive highly equipped model with rumble seat) that I used to have & sold to Eldon about 5 years ago (he's done nothing with it).

Are you planning to restore the '39 Panel Delivery? What's that sitting below it? -

How about treating us with a few photo's of the Railton?Brownie -
Rick,
Yep, I do plan on restoring the 1939 112 sedan delivery within the next few years; it has a really good solid frame and body with the exception of about 200 bullet holes. I just finished my 1954 sedan in July and am now getting around to fixing a few things on my wife’s 1950 Studebaker Champion Regal Deluxe Starlite Coupe (big name for such a small car), and by the way it is “her car†but I have never taught her how to drive it. I then need to take care of a few issues on my 1950 Pacemaker (50A). The vehicle sitting underneath the 39 is a 1940 Packard/Henney Funeral Coach (Hearse). It runs and drives, but I need to put a new wiring harness in it and get it repainted.

Guess you've got to be thankful that it wasn't 'parked' in a driving range...
Sounds like you've got quite a collection there - -
Pete-
I'd really like to see that Sportsman's Coupe. You can e-mail me a pic and I'll post it if you like. -
Onerare, as you may be aware, Allen Walrath (New York State) has a '39 panel delivery but, interestingly enough, it's the Pacemaker model with the headlights in the fender.
Josh, I have one of those side-facing seats which you're welcome to use as a pattern if you want to try to replicate one. Mine is the fixed one (shown on the driver's side in the photo), not the (apparently) hinged one on the passenger's side. -

I wasn't aware that the '39 Panel Delivery in NY was a Pacemaker model. I've got a '39 Commercial Series brochure (quite large), and it does not show any Pacemaker models. Here is an online copy of it -
http://classiccar.com/index.php?option=com_community&view=photos&task=album&albumid=63&userid=46498&Itemid=78
By any chance, do you have any pictures of Allen's '39 Panel Delivery? -
Guys - see of I have any old ones, do have several others of it I took at Eldon's.
-
A search of the web found this on Hudsontech's site. Is Allen's the only Pacemaker Panel Delivery known to exist? Could it be a 'brother' to the long lost '39 Pacemaker Pickup - i.e., a prototype?
Sorry for taking this thread 'off the deep end', but at least we're still talking about '39 Hudsons... -
Photos of the '36 Railton "sportman's coupe" are now posted at the Hudson 8 Yahoo web site.
-
I think this is a picture of Allen's 1939 Panel Delivery. I have been told that it used to be owned by Dennis Finch? I believe it is a long wheelbase vehicle, mine is the 112.
I don't think we hijacked this thread, we're just killing time waiting to see what the coupe sells for.

I wish I were more computer savy: I googled the website and got a photo of a 37 Railton at Medowbrook. I expect that is not yours? Just exactly how do I find your car at the Hudson 8 Yahoo web site?Brownie -
Brownie - I tried to "drag the link" here but can't do that either, let alone bring the pics here! Technology can be so great IF you know how to get it to work, LOL!
I just added a "Post" there with a bunch of info about that particular car & body style. -

That panel has been around the club. The first time I ever saw that vehicle was in OK City (circa 1976 or so) at a BIG COUNTRY HET meet. The vehicle was being driven by two fellas to California. If memory serves, the vehicle had been purchased in Chicago from Gus Suza.??? -

To post a link, go to the Internet command line (the one at the top of the page) and hilight the link by right clicking your mouse on the (browser icon) then the link will turn blue click on the link and when the box shows select copy. Come back to this page and in the REPLY Box that opens when you post move your mouse pointer above that looks like a WORLD with a chain. A box saying "insert link" will appear right click that world icon and a box will appear... past the link you copied into the box. Now that will appear in your reply. If you want to post pictures from else where on the net... move the mouse icon over the picture and right click ... this will bring up a box with the "address of the picture". Highlight the address and copy it. Come back to this reply box and select the icon above that is a yellow square with mountains and circle in it. Right click the icon and past in the address. This should bring the picture address to the reply and when you preview the post the links and pictures should appear.
Good Luck -
would take more than "luck", take a GPS to navigate all that jazz - far easier to just go to "Hudson 8" & if interested/like it, make it a "favorite".
-
O.k., well I tried typing in "Hudson 8" in my search browser, but didn't come up with where I was trying to go. Anybody post a link of where Pete is talking about?
-
Russell - it's at "Yahoo, Groups". I tried dragging it from "My Favorite Places" to here but it won't do it (don't know why as easy to do into an e-mail, but "what do chickens know" as we used to say in Indiana, LOL).

I went on the site today and joined up. Got my password and everthing. And yet, all I can access is the home page that has a photo of a very nice stepdown (49 if I remember right?) I can not get anywere from there. I guess I might wait for a day or two to see if something happens, but I am a member of the site now. Perhaps before Christmas I might get to see the railton?Brownie

The latest photos posted by Pete on the 'Hudson8' Group -
-
the 1st 2 are my "old" Railton, the '36 "sportsman's coupe", the 3rd photo the '35 "drophead coupe" I have now (current photo, purchased in this condition, working on the wiring now), and the last photo of a restored '35 almost identical to mine. This was at a ROC meet at a military base in England so the guy sitting in the rear is dressed up to look like Winston Churchill.
-
and I'd like to thank '46 PU for posting them, LOL!
-
Rick-
Thank you!! I tried signing up as well, no luck.
Pete-
That's gorgeous. I recall seeing this one at the museum, I believe. -
I don't understand why you guys are having trouble joining - just got a new member today and we have over 240 members + I'm the "moderator" who has to approve "applications" so would be no problemo!?!?!?!?!
-
just approved another, getting a "rash" of new members, GREAT
-
Perhaps I am in the que to be a member. I signed up about nine Utah time today. I guess that could be the reason that I have not been given access to the site yet; because becoming a member has to be approved. I have my log-on and password established.
Anyway, great looking cars. I am just a "railton want a be" with my 36 English Saloon by Coachcraft, but I do love these cars.Brownie -
Brownie - yes, they are VERY interesting as no 2 alike. Only a little over 1400 built & but about 25 in the U. S. today (none were sold here as were all right hand drive).
You could get various body styles or have a custom ordered one; choices of headlamps, dash instruments, bumpers optional, wiper choices, etc., etc. -
Brownie - the real interest, I would say, is in England where they were legendary in performance. To the ROC the open models far more desirable than closed models & the early models, thru '35, the most desirable as lighter & faster (the 1st Railtons built on the '33 T8 chassis but only in last 1/2 of '33 so extremely rare).
Ann & I went over for the ROC National this year. On Sat. aft. over a dozen Railtons & Broughs spent the afternoon on country roads (largely unpaved) visiting several medieval castles & churches, driving over 50 miles so they DRIVE their cars. I didn't see ANY car trailers at the host hotel so driveability important to them not necessarily the "cosmetics".
Here, the CCCA accepts ALL Railtons as true Classic cars - you don't have to apply as all were custom bodied.
Give you one example: my buddy Buzz has a '34 sports tourer (the most desirable of standard bodies offered as the lightest, a "roadster" to us as has no door windows). We put an NOS '41 engine in it a few years ago & I gave him a '40 o.d. which we "sneaked" in without having to cut the frame which he would not do. We drove it to Laughlin a few years ago & it LOAFS at 80 mph in o.d.
Very interesting cars, fun to own & drive (but need a co-pilot to watch for traffic on your blind side tho, LOL) & yet practical with the Hudson 8 chassis & drive train. -

Dave - is it a 6 or 8 cyl., and if a 6, does it have the supercharger?
-
just added 4 pics of a Brough Superior 8 taken this summer. Very interesting looking cars & much more rare than a Railton!
-
The Railton Lights Sports Tourer of 1935 was the definitive performance Railton. The body weighed just over a hundredweight, top speed 110mph and 0-60 in 8.8, both on a tall rear end ratio of 3.3:1. This top speed was with screen down and no headlights or guards. With screen up top speed was not much over 90mph due to wind resistance. Charles Follett lapped Brooklands at 112-115mph in the late '30's in his Railton LST - this one moved to NZ where it has been since the late '40's. I note that Ivan races his replica LST, a very nice looking car too.
BUT, the LST could also be driven in circles on full steering lock in TOP GEAR on the 3.3:1 axle ratio such was its flexibility. The compression was 7.75:1 and the engine moved back a few inches.
Only 2 were ever built and they were priced really high. Some people think 3 may have been built.
There are quite a few replicas around in the UK with varying accuracy, ie some are on the later '36-on chassis with the better hydraulic brakes and front axle. My clear favourite is the first one, the '33 Railton-Terraplane tourer for its purity of lines, ie low slung, light, big headlights and with non-valanced guards.. -
oldhudsons wrote:Dave - is it a 6 or 8 cyl., and if a 6, does it have the supercharger?
It's a 6, no supercharger. It was at our recent HET centenary looking great.
I've also added a photo of a NZ 34 Railton 8 Sports Berkley tourer.Dave Y
New Zealand -
the '34 Railton photo looks like my friend Buzz', the former John Bond Railton, but I think it has a Coachcraft body. This one appears to have "skirted" fenders ("wings") & I think Buzz' does not.

Went on the site again today and it asked me to change my password. I did so and posted a badge. I guess it will happen if I keep trying? Here is a photo of my car just after it was sent to Hong Kong. And a photo of it at the shop where I expect we will start the paint process this weekend. It is close to completing a frame off restoration.

what co. built the body Brownie?
I notice the wipers come thru the top of the windshield frame which is the way they are on my Railton. What co. made them (mine are "American Bosch")? -
Brownie - just happily approved your membership at the Hudson 8 site.
See your '36 a Coachcraft as is my Railton so perhaps putting the wipers thru the windshield frame one of their "hallmarks".
