brake work, need assistance please....

    i have a 1960 chrysler windsor, and i need to take out a wheel cylinder from the front... im use to workin on disc brakes, with very little knowledge about drum brakes... now my car has two cylinders per wheel in the front and i need to take out the bottom one... now i dont know if i have to take of the back plate to do so or not... if so how hard is it... any help would be great, i miss driving my car and would like to before the nice weather leaves...

    You should not have to remove the backing plate I don't believe. It's been a while since I have done these but they are very simple. A close examination of the system should reveal how things come apart.

    the link somewhat helped, and ive looked at the setup, and ive even looked at a wheel cylinder from napa just to see what one looked like... where the bolt goes thru to keep it in place, has to go thru two taps on the cylinder, one on each side of the plate... ive had a buddy of mine look at it and he doesnt know what to think of it... all i know is that its a weird setup in my opinion

    GAH!!!! i finally got my wheel cylinder out.... can some one help me out by giving suggestions on how to get a busted off bleeder screw out... i tried those easy out things but those did nothing for me... please help...

    It's never a good thing when the bleeder screw breaks off. You should have heated it.



    You may have to send it to one of the many vendors that rebuild them and re-sleeve them in stainless.

    i opted to buy a new one... now i got it all back together and now i cant seem to adjust the shoes... the left wheel spins but not for long... the right spins and keeps on spinning, but while driving and brakes get applied the car will pull to the right... and after about a four block use both sides were smoking, more so on the right.... im new to drum brakes so i dont know too much about them

    It's hard to determine what "keeps on spinning and spins not for long" really is but I would guess that the one on the right is grabbing more then one on the left.



    Those brakes are very touchy. There should be a an adjustment for each shoe. In otherwords there are two adjustments per wheel. You need to feel where each adjustment is when you spin the wheel. Spin the wheel and adjust one shoe with very light drag. Back it off just a small amout and make the other adjustment. Do the same for all wheels and see what happens.



    Smoking? New brakes will heat up and show signs of overheating because shoes are not ground to the drum contour like we used to do it back in the dark ages, lol. As long as there is not a lot of drag on any wheel, you should be all right.

    that is true... the right is grabbing more, and pulling the car more to that side whenever i go to apply the brakes... but that side spins more freely than the left so im confused there, czu i have a manual of sorts from 1962 thta goes back to like 53 or 54, and covers all makes, so that helped me start the adjusting... took some muscle to free them up abit... but right now my main concern is the smoking part, how much smoke is too much smoke? and how long should it last?

    i fixed the pulling part, i just adjusted the left side abit more and now its working great... still abit smokey tho...

    If the smoking is from the brakes being new or because they have some grease or oil on them from the installation, it should not last that long mileage wise. If they are overheating and smoking, then I would say you may have them to tight. Try backing them off some and see what you get.

    ok... ill test them out and if theyre still smoking after a day or so ill back them off and see what happens... but today they smoked, just not as much as they did the other day, and thank you for your help
