Turn signal question for 1951 sedan

I have an original 1951 200 deluxe sedan with 32,000 miles on the odometer. It is a great driving car and everything works on it. My turn signals work fine when I try them standing still, but when I put on the brakes they will flash a couple of times and then stop. If I turn the switch again the same thing happens. I am assuming that this means that there is a short in one of the brake light leads or in the switch itself. Before I go after it with the ohm meter I thought I would ask people who had some experience. To answer the obvious question the car is original in every way, including the old wiring harness. I have a new harness but want to get a paint job before replacing the old wiring. I also recognize that the old cotton loom insulation is probably shot somewhere and I am lucky that I don't have more shorts!
