I am getting an arc when I attempt to attach the battery terminal

I have recently rebuilt a 57 Ford Custom 300 we found in a barn. The wires were all still there and the car actually started and ran before we stripped it apart. I have re-attached all of the wires as the wiring diagram shows but still have an arc. The spark goes away when either the wire connected to the P/N or the wire going to the BAT on the Voltage regulator are removed. I found a fried wire from decades ago and have unspooled the loom to assure there are no melted or frayed wires. I am at a loss. Any pointers would be great. Maybe a bad voltage regulator? Maybe the terminals are hooked up backwards????

You may have a bad voltage regulator or a problem in the generator.

Positive / negative RON---gotta learn to talk short hand in this day . Just yankin your string, ho ho. I'd look for what ever that fried wire went to for one thing , and it could be any of a bunch of things . Just will have to check all your wireing for one that shows some resistance on the ohms meter when it shouldn't--BUD

Well, I thought that that was it but being text message illiterit, I thought I would ask so as not to guess wrong, or give a "rectal Diagnosis"( I think we all know what those are) ha,ha.
One other thing on this, some arc is normal on any car with a clock. I guess my question would be, how much of an arch is it?
I would also touch the cable to the battery to create the arch, remove the cable immediately and then connect it again to see if it archs again.

seems to me you have a power wire on a ground some where it happens when redoing wiring
