Can you tell me the correct ignition timing for a 1975,454?
-
Hoping some can give me the correct way to set this? As far as the correct steps, like pluging the vac.advance and at what rpm. that kind of stuff ..Thanks.
-
I don't have a chart in front of me to tell you what the timing should be set at, but the procedure should be pretty basic.
Engine hot and ideling (600-700rpm) in park/neutral, a/c off, vacuum line/lines disconnected from vacuum advance and plugged, timing light hooked-up to #1 spark plug wire, pre-loosen bolt on distributor with engine off and just snug to hold in place, start engine, loosen bolt and turn distributor to desired setting, tighten bolt.

Yep sound about right. Its been a while since I've had to do this. But i need the desired setting# then i would be a little better off. Some numbers i found range from 4* BTDC to 16* BTDC. I have it set at 8* BTDC right now and it seems to get a little rattley knock at high speeds. But runs ok otherwise. Also it is hard to turn over with the engine warmed up.I don't have a chart in front of me to tell you what the timing should be set at, but the procedure should be pretty basic.

Well with the timing at 8* BTDC this thing barley goes up a slight hill without sounding like its gonna blow up? Very hard pinging like there bad gas? And running hot?
I drove this thing 300 miles when i bought it and it ran pretty good on the hiway up hills with power to spare.
Adjusted the dist. out on the road this afternoon and made it a lot better but when i got home and put a timing light on it it was off the mark?
It was about 16* after top dead center?
Bought an aftermarket timing marker from the auto parts store, but think im going to pick a part to see if i can find an original. Is it possible i put it on in the wrong 2 holes? It sits right on the bottom 2 holes above the oil pan on the drivers side, right?
I'm losing my mind here, this is a valuable work truck to me and i need it on the road!!!
Times are tough all over ,wish i had the coin to take it to a mechanic but cant afford one right now..
Any more help would be appreciated.. -
Are you saying that it all of a sudden started running bad like this?
Maybe the timing chain jumped. What is the vacumm? Crank the engine with the number one plug out and the ignition coil disconnected. Get the number one piston on top dead center on the compression stroke.

Well i guess yeah. Started just one day driving up a hill after i was accelerating started to act like it wasnt getting enough gas or something. I pushed the peddle to go and it hesitated and surged a few times. If i put it at 8* deg. BTDC with the vac. adv. pluged and the vac. port on the manifold pluged ( i do plug the manifold vacume where the advance was hooked up right?) Or do i leave the manifold where the hose was unpluged and sucking air? Never thought about it? I caped them both off.Are you saying that it all of a sudden started running bad like this?

anyway it runs pretty good just tooling around town. Even runs 180.. 190 tops. But get it on the hiway and heats right up over 210 !!even more sometimes. Try a hill and its pingin and detonating like crazy. I have the timing set at 8* After TDC right now (at least i think i do if im doing it right) and i have better power up hills still with the pinging and detonating but i know its just not right. With everything hooked up the timing marker flashes at the 0* at idle. Dont know if that matters or not?
My timing light is digital and is able to set advance on the gun up or down but i dont know how to use that feature. I just leave it set with 0.0 on it and shoot it that way.
Im wondering what the timing should be at high rpm so maybe i could check it that way. The timing light has the digital rpm guage on it as well.
Thanks for any advise at all..
Think im just going to go ahead with the last of the replacements to the cooling system. Witch are the water pump and the fan. Ive replaced everything else.
Another question what weight oil should i use? I have 5-30 in it and it seems to dump oil pressure when it hit 200+ degrees or so. Was going to change to 10-40 or even some high milage stuff..
