    Is there anyone out there that is famaliar with an instrument cluster to use when up-dating a 6v-6 cyl chevy up to a v/8 and 12v electrical system?



    I prefer analog gauges as opposed to digital, I'd really appreciate any information regarding this matter.

    Bill,

    Couldnt' you change the alt. battery, coil and starter from 6 to 12 volt.

    My brother and I changed over a '53 Packard Flat Head 327 from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground, by just changin those items. and also the distributor. We used a heavier guage wireing harnesess also. R.V.

    You could use the original temp & oil gauges, but the amp & fuel might need to have an inline reducer or something like that. I am dealing with the same problem on my '50 Chevy as we type. I just di-sected the dash cluster and was trying to come up with a plan. I want to retain the original look, but am definately going with 12 volt. I may just use the temp & oil and go with a set of the under-dash units for amp & fuel, ala, "Ole Skool Rod"

    Hi Billy

    If you can find one use a voltage reducer that drops the voltage to the gauges like the 54 HUDSON does I switched my 54 hornet coupe to 12 volt and have had no problem with the gauges. The reducer keeps voltages in the 6-8 volt range if I am not mistaken.

    There is a device for dropping 12v to 6v. I have one right here in front of me. It s called Vol-Ta-Drop Produced by Vol-Ta-Drop corp Van Nuys, Calif. They come with different amp ratings. I bought this in 1984 to use on a 6v veater on a 12v system. I have never used it.

    I don't know if Vol-Ta-Drop corp Even exists any more but may be worth checking out.

    Glad ta see ya posting here. This board is way slower then the Hudson one for some reason. I try to keep something going here, if possible.

    I sold my 2 Hudsons, but am thinking about looking at that '50 Hudson Coupe that my pard still has with the Caddy engine in the back. I think I can salvage it. The other 2 that I had were just too much work & rust for what I was wanting.

    I'm working on a 1950 Chevy Fleetline fordor now. Got a '55 Chevy rear end and a '69 Corvette motor & 4-speed to go in it. Just got the old motor, trans & rear end out this weekend. Gotta pressurewash the underside real good and get all the squrrell nests and dirt dobbers out! Then I am gonna seal it with something before I put the re-done '55 rear end in. Gonna re-work the front end next, get the brakes workin' and start doing the engine lay-out.
