If this happens it will be a floor on old car prices
-
If this passes and becomes law there will be a floor on old car prices and collector parts will be hard to come by from the pick and pay approach. Good bye Hudson's in barns or backyards for bargains!

Why don't those idiots understand that NONE of these throw away money deals will get us out of this mess. It's the working man that keeps our economy on track, not the rich, and without a permanent long term job he can't . You can't buy in America with out a job in America .

It's window dressing to appear like they're doing something. The vehicle fleets out there will get turned over, over time anyways. All that would theoretically do is accelerate the process. Indirectly it's giving money to the car companies without having to say they gave money to the car companies. Of course that might not stop them from boosting the price of all their cars by $4500.
As far as our old cars are concerned you know maybe as a hobby we should get more pro-active instead of trying to shoot down bad ideas that keep coming up and get an old car/heritage protection act passed, sort of like an endangered species act for American cars made before 1965. Then maybe people in the future will still know that we used to make cars. Just a thought. -

An old car heritage protection act is a great idea. Too bad we need even more laws to protect our interests.
Atleast here in wonderful California, if a car is older than 1972 it still doesn't have to pass the smog requirement. -
We are in a Depression--and when it's over the history books will call it the worst Depression in the history of civilization. The American consumer is tapped out right now and will be for years to come.
In another six months the average consumer will be in such dire financial straits that the offer of $4,500 to take on more debt to buy a new vehicle will be laughable.
And, yes, the government will cause the Depression to be deeper, more painful and last longer than it would if the capitalistic system were allowed to work. But, the capitalists have disgraced themselves with their rampant corruption as they milked fortunes for themselves and their cronies out of the system. They have broken it for the rest of us for years to come because the high profile capitalist business "leaders" are going to be punished by this government.
And, unfortunately, a shotgun aimed at the big wheels will put all the bicycles out of business as well. -
I understand the desire to kick-start things but they really ought to set an age limit on the traded in cars. The concept is to get people to turn in their late model uneconomical car on a new car. Not to drag a 25-year-old car out of the weeds, one that hasn't been driven for years anyway. So many of these good intentions are pushed through as legislation before anyone really stops to think of all the consequences.

Congressman Dingle and others are really not interested in the antique or classic car markets. The point of this and previous clunker bills is to drive another agenda.

In the most current state the bill "HIDES" behind the immediate need to infuse monies into the failing domestic car companies. It is rather sad most of us are looking at the loud noise and failing to see the real puppet operators are about to steal 10s of Billions of dollars as they orchestrate the replacement of ALL of the USG fleet of .... Gas guzzling ... global warming offending... and non dual fuel vehicles with NEW vehicles. This will be done without regard to the condition of the current vehicles. NOTE there are other provisions which will do one of two things... DUMP all these cars on the market or crush all to be turned into fodder for the overseas scrap dealers. Note all of these actions will be done at the expense of all of those who pay taxes. If my advice is of value ... contact you congress person (PC) and ask what the heck is going on... USG bails out the US auto market... aka Fiat in Chrysler's case, tells GM the CEO has to go... now is planning to buy vehicles from the same companies.
Anyone got an aspirin?
This is making my head hurt trying to keep track....
I got my toys hidden in the Garage... and I could care less about your tax dollars to help buy a new vehicle.... and for the record have told my Senators and local congressman via telephone and email.:mad::mad:

Perhaps we should offer cash for worthless legislators and replace them with better editions.Bill

As usual these efforts are futile. The people driving the "clunkers" can't afford anything else. All that giving them $4500, or whatever, will do is to encourage them to go find another clunker or start walking. Because even if they take the "bribe" money and give up their car, they are driving the "clunker" for one, and only one, reason - they damned well can't afford the payments on a new car!!!
I speak from experience. For years, while I served in the military, I drove 15 and 20 year old Ramblers, and other older cars. Simply because that's what I could afford on an E-3, E-4 or even E-5 salary back then. Kids had to be take care of, bills had to be paid and it took both my wife and I working to make ends meet.
Go down Maine, I mean WAAAAAAAY down Maine - people there are still living in the results of the last recession/depression. There are many areas here in the south the same way. Low wages and/or no jobs keep you driving whatever you can cobble together to get from one place to the other. Sure can't make car payments with food stamps and welfare assistance.

The bill reads that the vehicle in question HAS to be a running, driving vehicle that has been registered at least six months.
Still, these bills MUST be stopped, no matter where they rear their ugly heads. Our Congresscritters are getting their inspiration from the EU equivalent law, that is going into law the end of May.
The government owns two of the Big Three now, so that money goes to the car companies, all right...then straight to the government.
When will we, as a nation, gather the courage to oust EVERY single incumbent when their term ends??? There should be NO Ted Kennedys or Robert Byrds in Congress - they literally have spent their entire lives, ruining this country. Boot them, and all of the rest, out in the next election, or the cycle of stupidity continues.
BTW, this is NO Depression! We do not have soup lines for blocks, we do not have 25% unemployment, and 75% of Americans are not completely broke; literally penniless, as in the Great Depression. A serious recession, certainly. But it's no Depression - far from it. Although out "leaders" are hell-bent on getting us there, that's for certain."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
This type of program is likely to fail due to it's short-term benefits vs. costs. IE the uptick in car sales wouldn't last more than 6 months
But, if they tried to tie this "Retire a clunker" to "Global Warming", "Carbon Offsets" or "Neighborhood Beautification" then we'd better start marching! -
They will, give them time. Borrow (don't buy) Algore's "Earth in the Balance" - he has a plan to do exactly that, effectively banning old cars from all public streets in the interest of the "environment" - and fattening his pockets from selling fully fabricated "carbon credits". Must be nice to sell something that does not exist.to solve a "problem" that Mankind is powerless to do squat about! The Earth will live on, for billions of years after Man has vanished like the dinosaurs. And, ironically, becomes crude oil!"The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
It's becoming harder and harder to buy fuel for older cars. First, they remove the needed lead, causing valve damage. Then they start adding ethenol, breaking down rubber gaskets, rings, and seals. What's next? Probably some kind of "Penalty Tax" for "non-efficent, non-GREEN" cars.
