    Hey all,

Where can I track down some shims for the rear axle bearing caps for my 36T ? I have it all back together and dont have any end play on either side. Manual says should be .004 to .010.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

These are the sort of things that may still be hanging around in their original wrappers, from an original dealer's stock. Or, still clinging to the back of used axle bearing cap in a box full of caps. Have you contacted a few of the "usual suspects" who sell used Hudson parts, and advertise in the WTN? For example, Dave Kostansek?

Why not just make em out of shim stock?

It's a little tricky to set these. You can't just set each side independently because both axles contact a rather loose block in the middle of the differential.

You have to set one side to whatever, then check the other side and add or subtract about half the error on the first side, then set the second side to specs.

    Done.

When you do it right, you may have enough shims, but Bill Albright must have a ton of em.

It's important that you have both wheels off the ground when adjusting these as well. It's possible to get a false limit if one wheel is on the ground, and teh weight of the car shifts it over. You can cut a spacer out of ordinary gasket material for packing the bearing cap out. Tighten it up thoroughly, it won't compact any further.

    Geoff.
If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.
