Newbie here. Just Purchased a 54 ranch wagon for a Rat rod. Trying to find out some more info about it. It appears Ranch Wagons were a part of the Mainline Family. Is this Correct? Will most parts from the 54 mainline/customline sedans swap with the ranch wagon?

Does any one know where some other good Forums are where the Mainline/Customline or Ranch wagon guys hang out?

I am not a ford guy (BUT don't hold that against me) I picked up a flathead Ford motor as the start of a rat rod project that never went any further.

I researched the motor a little to try to determine what year it was.

It is a 24 stud motor

The motor has the water pumps on the front of the motor (currently missing)

It has a crab distributor cab (which tells me 42-45) (distributor missing)

The bell housing is built into the block (clutch and pressure plate present)

Has prewar 81A heads

How else can I determine what year this motor is? I understand that Ford did not keep very good records back then. What is this motor worth?

Thanks

I purchased a 37 Ford Pickup with a newer V8 Flathead. I was told it is a 1953. I know it is newer because the distributor is in the front. I have searched all the Flathead sites to try and figure it out but can't. On the heads it has EAB and on the other head it has EAB D D102. On the passenger side of the motors bell housing on the back of the engine I found E1221. The engine is RED. I checked the http://flatheaddrag.com/birthday.html site and where they say to look (intake gasket face), all I see is an E. Can't find any other numbers on the block. Anyone have any suggestions on what year this is and what model motor? Also is there any other locations to look or reference sites. Sorry just got the truck and this is my first Flathead AWESOME!!

I had a friend named Phil in high school that cut up a 48 Ford, shortened the frame and fabricated a second transmission behind the original trans. Ended up with a frame, suspension, seat, steering wheel and firewall to make a dune buggy. In both 1st gears it could almost climb a tree.

He could make anything go fast. He built a 52 or 53 Mercury with a S.C.O.T.T. blown flathead engine.

On one of our trips to Zuma Breach, he decided traffic was too slow on the Ventura Freeway. Back then the Ventura Freeway had a chain link fense dividing the East and West lanes with a strip of asphalt between the fense and the fast lane just wide enough for emergency parking. Phil pulled onto that narrow strip of asphalt and proceeded to pass every car at 120 mph +. I was in the back seat by the left window inches away from the chain link fense. Needless to say I closed my eyes. That was scarry. Fortunately we arrived unharmed.

On another occation Phil and I had a drag race. I don't recall how the challenge was made but it was to be 2 blocks long, aboiut 600 feet. I had an original 1935 Chevy coupe 6 cylinder at the time. Phil had to start and stay in 3rd gear all the time with that blown mercury, and we both start from a dead stop. I had the advantage from a stop. I could use all gears and would have won. In my rear view mirror I could see the head lights on his car change height as he dropped the trans into a lower gear. He flew by me like I was standing still.

Those were some fun and scarry times in our carefree and sometimes reckless young lives.

Just some rememberances. Lee

I was at one of our local cruise nights and was talking to a Dodge Flathead engine owner. He said that he had swapped a slant six crankshaft into his DeSoto (25 inche long) Big Block. I didn't think that was possible. Has anybody else done it? And HOW did they do it? Thanks
