I have a 1947 Chris Craft with a Chrysler flathead 6 in it. Here's my problem. The engine starts very well and runs smoothly with new plugs in it but the plugs foul after a very short time - usually less than 1 hour of running. We figured the problem was the fuel/air mixture being to rich. The engine is equiped with a Zenith updraft carb that has both a low speed (idle) and high speed adjustment. We have turned the low speed screw in as far as it it will go (it still starts easily and idles well enough) and have turned the high speed adjustment (a t-handle on the side of the carb) in all the way and then back out one full turn. This seems to be a lean as we can go and still get smooth acceleration. Even with these changes, the plugs continue to foul in less than an hour. The fouling by the way is black carbon deposits on all 6 cycliners, although I have noticed that the plugs at the "bottom" (the egine is at ~10 degree slope to allow for a direct connection to the propellar shaft) of the engine seem to have more soot than the others. Seeing as this hasn't worked, my next thought is timing...what do you think? If yes, how do I advance or retard the timing? Thanks for your input. Randy

I have checked and rechecked everything!!! It has Offy intake with a 600cfm holley carb. Set at 6psi, everything is correct. Even did the oil passage port for the intake valley. This thing will not run. It sounds like its off 180 degrees. I pulled everything apart and rechecked. I have bought almost everything again to double check my equipment and its still the same. Just sputters and sputters, anyone deal with something like this on a 4" stroked Flathead. cam is isky with 262/272 D.L. Thanks for anyone that has any clue. I am about ready to dump the whole motor and drop in a crate motor in my 48 Ford coupe. Thanks.

Anyway, i currently own an austin 10/4 saloon with a problem!

Today as i was undoing a stud, i pulled out a silver screw type sleeve inside the stud hole. This seems to be some sort of screw thread filler sleeve that is holding the stud into the hole. Even though this has come out, there is still a thread inside the stud hole, which is too big for the srud. Does anyone have an idea of what this part could be or where to buy one?

The stud size is 3/8 BSF.

Possibly big trouble but I dunno. This is my first flattie and I'm just tring to figure out what is wrong exactly. I have a 230 ci, 1950 straight, flathead 6 in my dodge meadowbrook. About a month ago on the ferry home from the islands I got a slew of white smoke from the tail pipe. it dissipaed on the drive and I though a batch of bad gas or something. It has come back in spades accompanied by water drops spitting out of the tail pipe. Blown head gasket-ville... I know. Here is my question. I am going to try the repair my self as I like getting dirty and learing things. Given that the engine still runs at normal temperature and really hasn't lost much if any power what are the chaces that this is just going to be a gasket problem and not a cracked block or warped head? I looked into the cylinders and I have water in the 3 and 4 pistons so I'mn thinking the breach is between them, where the gasket is thin. More than anything does any one have any tips for an overhead valve grease monkey venturinig into flattie country? Thanks for any help.

Got this '51 Coupe recently. It actually has been completely rewired

professionally. However the temp gauge stays at 'H' all the time.I actually removed the gauge to see if it had a problem and when it appeared to not have one I attempted to put it back and it broke.(the pointer). So now I bought a new one and got it in this time. With the ignition on, the needle does not budge from H. There is juice going to the gauge from the dual terminal sending unit on the driver side head. The other side also has juice. (By the way, in this setup where does the juice originate?Where do the sending units get powered from?)This may seem elementary but I'm somewhat new to flatheads.

Must I replace both sending units or is there a way to test them?

I just installed two new thermostats and the heater blows warm air.

Is the gauge supposed to go to cold as the ignition is turned on similar to the fuel gauge which moves as soon as it is powered up?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I've got a low oil pressure problem I hope someone can help me with. I purchased a used 8BA, rebuilt it (rebore, new cam, new crank & cam bearings, new helical gear oil pump, reconditioned the rods, etc.) and installed in my pickup two years ago. I double-checked all bering clearances during assembly. At cold idle, the engine had about 30 psi oil pressure and at cruising speed, about 45 psi. When warm the oil pressure dropped to about 10 psi at idle and 30 psi at crusing speeds. I immediately pulled the pan and re-checked the main & rod bearings - all within spec, and disassembled the new oil pump - it looked perfect. I put it back together and have driven it about 12,000 miles. A few days ago, it developed a low-end 'double-knock' and I pulled the pan. The mains are fine, but the upper rod bearing shells show wear, some to the copper. Fortunately, the crank is fine. The noise is a 'double-knock', and disappears above 2500 RPM - I don't think it's rod bearing noise. I'm concerned the cam bearings may also be damaged and plan to pull the engine apart (bummer!) I suspect the 'double-knock' may be wrist-pin noise, but won't know until I get it apart. Can anyone suggest why a fresh engine would have such low oil pressure? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1951 Hudson 232 with overdrive. My problem is that the 2 cylinders closest to fire wall are not working. When I have it running it misses and when I took off the 2 spark plug wires there is no change but when I take off the other 4 wires there is a change. I took the head off and all the valves and pistons are seating fine. Have put a tune up kit on it. Thanks for your help. Don
