Hello everyone, this is my first post and I hope for more to come. I've always loved classic cars (50s and prior) and I'm finally ready to buy one. I've been looking at early late 40s and early 50s Mopar cars with flathead 6 cylinder engines. I've always liked them and I think that they could be a good place to start. I may have found a 1950 Chrysler Windsor with close to mint interior, straight body with extremely minimal rust (none on floors or in trunk), and a good engine and transmission. The car has 87,000 original miles. It's a second owner car and has always lived locally. It has been stored since the 60s and the owner stored it properly.

I'm curious about how long I should have until the flathead finally quits. I've read that these engines are bullet proof, but I've also read that they last from 70-90K miles. Is that accurate? I believe the car has been mechanic owned since the 60s or so. I know that old engines don't typically last as long as newer engines do. I do have experience with engines and lots of auto repair experience, so the project doesn't scare me, but I want to know how long I generally have until the car is dead. Also, just for kicks, what kind of fuel economy does an old inline flathead 6 give? Around 12ish? Thanks for all the help. I hope to have one of these cars soon and hang around longer!

Thanks everyone,

I have a 1953 Ford F-600 cab&chassis with the 239 Flathead. It ran when parked 11 years ago, but naturally, it won't even try now. I haven't touched it at all, but I am planning to start work soon. Any tips on how to get it running? As far as I know, it was filled with antifreeze 11 years ago, so the engine shouldn't have frozen at all (the worst winter we had was in 2004, so its only been through one really bad winter). This truck was purchased by my father in 1998, and parked in 1999. He was going to rebuild it, but he's gone now. Its a big deal for me to rebuild it. So, any tips or help would be really useful.

Hey all, just found this site and i hope to learn a great deal here. I've got a 1953 Ford Customline with the original flathead V8 engine. Well me and my dad were working on it while he was in town visiting and we got it all tuned up and running pretty smooth, but the only problem is it's over heating. We got a new radiator cap, and i pulled the thermostats out so it would run cooler. But still nothing, it will get into the H on the gauge and when i'll shut it off i can hear the coolant boiling. The only option i can think of would be that the water pumps need to be rebuilt. Is there anything else it could be? my dad said he flushed the coolant system and put all new fluids in it. Also, if the water pumps do need rebuilt, how hard is it, and are there any directions on removing them and such?
I called Corn Huskers Rod and Custom for the conversion bell housing, clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. I was told that my 11 inch fly wheel will not work for this application. He instructed me to find and buy a 10 inch long fly wheel that the three finger pressure plate will bolt on to. So, I looked on craigs list and ebay. I found nothing....I can buy a new one for an outragous amount of $400.00. Has any one done this type of conversion? And where can I find this fly wheel? What is the difference between the fly wheels, besides one inch? I'm a rookie at this type of stuff and not sure what I'm looking for. He told me not to get a diaphram??? And not a borgan beck??? I have no idea what he is talking about??

Hey Everyone, I am new to the site and to flathead engines and mine is starting to give me a flat head....

My vehicle is a 1956 Willy’s pickup 4x4 with all original drive-train except somebody swapped the original four cylinder for a straight six flat head out of a 1953 Studebaker Champion. When I first got it there was an exhaust valve in the second cylinder that was stuck open. I took the off manifold, the head off, oiled and worked the stuck valve until it was free, and while I had it apart I checked and cleaned all the valves, pistons, cylinder walls, etc (everything looked really good) and put it back together (also running 60lbs compression per cylinder). Once I did that I put new mechanical fuel pump on it and rebuilt the one barrel carburetor and fired it up and the engine runs like a dream. It sounds good, it revs up and idles great, absolutely no hesitations or misses or anything (even got the heat riser in the exhaust side of the manifold free and working properly). As soon as I shift the truck into gear, it falls on its face and has absolutely no torque. Even with shifting the transfer case into low range; it is a little better, but still really lacking in get up and go. The truck has 4.88-1 axel gear ratio and it currently has tires on it that are 30 inches tall.

I realize that my truck will never be worth anything as a collector’s item but the thought of it, and keeping it at lest time specific as far as technology means a lot to my Dad and I so we really want to keep this flat-head six but we are out of ideas. One thing I do know is when I took the manifold off the original gasket ripped so for test purposes I used high heat silicon to goop it up (this was before we knew it ran). The silicon did not take and I know there is a lot of air coming in and escaping (seriously throwing off the air fuel mixture on the intake, and the back pressure in the exhaust) but would that be enough to cause absolutely no low end power?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I'm restoring a 38 Limo and overheating probs are slowing everything down. Background is that I bought the car in Calif. and drove it home to Okla. No problems but vapor lock. Had two Vintage Air units installed but nothing was done internally to engine though the shop had the car for two years. On the way home the first thirty miles were uneventful but then the fan belt (as well as water pump, obviously) got thrown. Engine overheated, let it cool down, drove 15 miles, engine overheated, towed it home.

Now we can't get the overheating problem solved. New thermostat tested and installed, recovery tank, three(1) electric fans installed, radiator core pulled, cleaned and tested, restrictor plate installed thinking maybe water was flowing through radiator too fast, etc.

The only thing that changed since the cross country trip was the engine overheated twice and the pulley size increased very slightly (doesn't seem like enough to cause problem.) It overheats in 10 miles of highway driving with no A/C running; temp just goes straight up to "too hot."

I've heard maybe rust in water jacket has fouled passages but how would I flush it? I don't want to pull the freeze plugs and not be able to seal them again.

I have a 1950 Ford F3 3/4 ton with a Flathead V8 with 90,000 m. It has been siting for 20 years and it has very low compression. Only 30 pounds in all cylinders. Cam shaft timing is ok, I put oil in the cylinder and compression stayed the same.

I cleaned the valves and it is still low. What else could I do?

I am helping my friend across the street with this project. He bought a 31 Ford and we cut the body off to make a woody. He also bought a 53 merc flathead to replace the 4 banger.

Just ran a compression test on the motor and we have a dead cylinder. All the rest tested about 90lbs and one had a little oil on the plug. The oil and the dead cylinders were on the same side. Do we need to rebuild all the cylinders or just look at putting rings and a hone on the two bad ones?

I know nothing about the flatheads but I am learning every day.

After a 40 year hiatus I've bought some flatheads for a '47 PU project, I will probably use the '52 Merc, so what I'm looking for is some advice to build a street motor using some modern ideas. I figure what's happened the 4 decades that I was involved with SBC's there must have been some advances that improve reliability and usefulness. Previously (early 60"s) it was mill the heads and dual exhaust and an intake swap if you could find one. I know Offy still makes intakes, are they any better than the old ones? how about the cams, heads etc.???
