Here's the deal...I've got a chance to pick up a complete 308, air cleaners to oil pan. I've got my '37 Terraplane with the stock 212, and it has a nearly fresh engine with maybe 500 miles on it now. I know 262 and 308 swaps have been done in the '36 and '37 cars before. How big of a PITA is this swap, really? I'd like to keep the 212 trans, since it has a '53 Hornet O/D on it already.

I know the 308 is longer, but I do not know how much so. I think this would be a great swap, with an engine that would easily make double the horsepower of the 212. Ideas? Real-world experience out there? Anyone know the weight difference between a 308 Twin-H and a 212, both complete?

Floating the idea around, nothing even cast in wet concrete yet.

I noticed that Hudson 262's use the same bore size as a 359 Packard straight eight, so I am wondering what the pin height is on a 262, as well as the rod length and the size (length, diameter) of the rod bearings. The reason for the curiosity is that I'm building a rather "high performance" Packard engine and am wondering where you guys get your performance pistons. From what I can tell from my old Hudson blocks and parts that I used to have is that the Hudson engine is built a lot like the Packard eights, same angled valves and other details. Since there's a LOT more people racing Hudsons than there are Packards, I plan on doing a lot of the modifications that you guys do to your engines to mine. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Pridemore Disc brake or Subframe swap which to do?

One more set of questions for everyone.

I purchased the Pridemore disc kit a few years ago and am just getting to my 49 hopefully this month. My plans changed and I was going to use a GM G-body sub frame on the front instead. Something like a 84 El Camino. I had a line on one for two months and they guy flaked on me. 3rd time a Craigslist guy has dumped on me in the last month. I'm tired of it...

Now I’m pissed and scrambeling to find another frame, They are very hit or miss to find up here because all the G-bodies get burned up in race cars up here.

So I am planning on putting one of my 454’s in my 49 and I have 10 days off in three weeks and would like to start on the front, I’m scrambling to find another frame but it’s not looking good. Then I thought I do have the Pridemore kit……

So any advice will be of help. After the GF moving out, out of money, I’m pulling my hair out and need to start on some Hudson metal to get my mind off of it all.

Question #1. I have searched a lot and can’t find much on a G-body subframe swap in a step down. I would like any info, rumors, hearsay whatever on the swap..

#2 This will not be a show car, I am doing a 2 door conversion and a motor swap to get it on the road next summer (the 2 door swap may wait if I can get the front end figured out and make it driveable)

#3 Would you guys skip the subframe swap and stick the Pridemore kit under it and call it good?

My main problem is the steering components make it hard to figure out how to stuff a Gm motor in there, is there a Rack and Pinion that I can swap or reverse the spindles and make this a front steer?

Or option #4 is to jump off a bridge. I

have 3 other cars going right now and I am going to stop and focus on the 49, but I'm still not sold on the stock suspension or should I be?

Hey all, it's been a long time since I was in here, and I’ve been surfing around for a month again, but I am finally getting back to my 49 4 door Commodore this month and I have the plan to change it to a 2 door.

I didn’t want to jump on the conversion thread started by Chez.

I was hoping for some input on my 4 door conversion idea.

I have "2 door" doors already and was thinking to go at the 2 door conversion differently than is being done by Chez. I was going to move the B pillars back, use the 2 door doors, and then build a rear window area and use the skins from the previous rear doors to graph onto the quarters. I am wondering if this approach has been done and if I’m missing something. My measurements seem to make me think this will be a easier approach rather than stretching the front doors. The doors from the 2 door are from a sedan not a coupe so my thought is they should in theory “fit” my roofline and door jambs?

Any thoughts?

I don't know about you all, but I think all these cars and trucks with Flowmasters and similar mufflers all sound alike going down the road. The only difference is the size of the exhaust tips the car/truck is running. With that...

I happen to like the sound of a glasspack muffler. My favorite old-school mufflers are the Smithy's 30" with 2" in/out, and the old Thrush mufflers that were painted black, white, and red and had the "thrush" bird and logo on them. Some turn-down tips out the back for the looks, an "X"-pipe as a crossover (as opposed to an "H" connection"), and the classic sound is there! I'm doing my son's '67 C-10 and my '67 Dodge CSS D-100 in the same way, with Smithy's on both! Had a single Thrush on one of my previous Hudsons, too, and it sounded right!

The chambered pipe that was used on the '69 Camaro had a righteous sound to it, too!
1. I have placed the battery tray on the firewall since it is more convinient there than being in the trunk.

Hi all, have rebuilt the Edelbrock crate engine failure, I worked to 1am last night on the old girl, so i can take her to the 100 anniversary down under, still got about another 8-10 hours to make her back presentable, but the new engine is starting to do what it should, I still think there is still a problem in the carb (AVS carter) we will give it 1 more shot for an hour or so tonight and if cant get it were we think it should be, have been offered a Holley on a similar sort of engine setup to try and run on for the weekend, the old story 1 step forward and a couple back

Well, spent a little coin this morning, and for that I'm going to have to kiss up to Mama real good for the next few weeks!

But, I have purchased the motor that will go into my '50 Pace Coupe. It's a.................................................................................................
...........1955 Chrysler 331, 300HP, Dual Quad intake. Well, what do nyou guys think? Looks like someone started on it, looks line bored and cylinder bored with that preserving stuff (cosmoline?) all over it. There is not a bit of rust on the block, heads, rockers, intake. The pistons look like they are aluminum, but it's almost all eaten up. Don't have much history on it, I will have to have it miced and such to make sure there are no cracks or other flaws. I will need a crank, but the heads are complete with valves and springs, will need pushrods though. It has the harmonic balancer with it.

I verified the block casting numbers, but haven't checked the heads yet top see if they are stock to the block.

They will just be stored for right now as I need to get our Dodge finished before I get started on the Coupe. I will probably mate a later model o/d/ auto tranny. But I will probably keep the dual quad carbs (need to get new carbs for it w/ adapters) and run off the rear one, with the front as a dumper.

I'm very excited about this find and especially all for $1,200. It is nice to see something nice happen to this family for once these past couple years! lol

Jay

Any thoughts guys?

I purchased disc brakes from guy in NC. Had problems with them getting real hot. Took them to brake shop and had them power bled and adjusted. Finally I stumbled on how to set it up. (Used everything in directions). Take the adjustment off the rear brakes. Then loosen rod going into master cylinder. Adjust rod out until front discs have drag then tighten adjustment on master cylinder rod. Then adjust rear brakes and you should have good brakes.

Anyone else seen the November 2009 issue of "Diesel Power" magazine? The feature vehicle is a 1947 HUDSON, yes, HUDSON pickup that just happens to have a Ford 7.3 Diesel engine!

It is WWAAAYYYY cool--Truck is licensed and used on the street----Road raced,1/4 miled, and speed-raced. Very interesting story on the User---

However---The truck itself is really neat--Top chopped a small amount, otherwise a beautiful stock-appearing HUDSON p/u. Even has Commodore turn signal lamps on front fenders.

Truck has been heavily modified otherwise, turns quarter mile @ 95mph, has been timed at 138 mph. It's a showcase for Para- and Quadriplegic controls for autos and is actally controlled by use of a mouth control.

Article states that the truck will be shown (and used!) @ SCTA events, including Bonneville. Can't wait to see in person locally.

Another shining article on the great HUDSON vehicles!!!
