I have a '38 Terraplane mdl 81 brougham which I've had for over 30 years. Finally getting around to doing something with it. I don't exactly want to street rod it, but the old 212 has a knock and I was thinking of exploring the possibility of putting a 308/Twin-H motor in it.

Anyone out there have some advice for this, or want to tell me how stupid this idea is??? Appreciate any thoughts. Brent

While driving down a North Carolina blactop this past wknd enroute to Grandaughter's Graduation thru a Construction Zone I seen a '53 Hudson stepdown coupe in the distance setting outside of a garage without a front end or doors so I had to inquire. I learned that two NASCAR Shop employees were building this car for an unnamed prestigious person. Its from Arizona, a rust free car getting Chevy drive train and a roll cage. It will duplicate the 'Doc Hudson' real Race Car appearance inside. They were working on it everytime I drove by over the wknd (day & nite) so I stopped a couple of times. They narrowed 'Inboard' the 'original Hudson rear frame rails' to install wide NASCAR Wheels on a Ford 9" locker... Real professional appearing like Factory built 'Tub's')....
Back to the drawing board!

It's been a few months since I posted any updates on my '50 Pacemaker project, and after a series of events (the list is long) I decided to start at the beginning. It's pretty fitting, since that's where I am on my project!

A little Background

Quickly... I purchased a '50 Pacemaker (which is probably the best $1200 I've ever spent in my lifetime!) sight unseen, knowing full well that she needed a LOT of work. Body and frame are really solid, with a little surface rust. No engine, trans, but most of everything else was there... and she rolled. How could I go wrong! And so it began...

The '50 that was a '49

She shows up on my doorstep, and then it really sunk in... she needed a LOT of work! Not knowing much about Hudsons, besides the fact that I think they're one of the best looking cars ever to be manufactured, I dove in head first learning as much as possible as quickly as possible...

First thing I find out, she's a '49 Super Six! I really can't say enough good things about her, but I really started to feel I was in over my head. I found as many sites as possible (gotta love the fellas on Classiccar.com!), and touch base with those that really know what I'm going to be dealing with for the next year or so.

First Things First

After chatting with quite a few of you here that were willing to share some of your wisdom (free of charge, even!), I felt better and realized there are enough generous people out there willing to help out a "newbee" that wants to do things right.

I decided to clean the "cr@p" out of the car, remove all the rotted interior possible, salvage what I could, and get a good plan of attack going. Nothing bothers me more than seeing a mess, and after a quick introduction to POR 15 and Silver Bullet, I moved on with the later and started to clean her out.

Here are a few from the beginning:

Washington Governor to Sign Street Rod and Custom Vehicle Bill Into Law on April 18, 2011

Anyone who has ever tried to license a homebuilt car knows how difficult it can be to title and register it. Not only is the process lengthy, it's frustratingly arduous. But all that is about to change.

On Monday, April 18, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire will sign into law Senate Bill 5585, which will enact new classifications for custom vehicles, street rods, hot rods, kit cars, replicas, etc.

According to State Senator Michael Carrell, sponsor of the bill (and collector, restorer, and avid car enthusiast in his own right), the new classifications will help streamline the registering and titling process, making it faster and a whole lot easier to take that creation of yours to the street.

"If someone puts a 2009 Ford engine in the body of a 1949 Ford Coupe," says Senator Carrell in a written press release, "there shouldn't be any confusion about how to legally license the vehicle. Moreover, if someone builds a car from the ground up from scrap parts, aftermarket items or custom-manufactured pieces, it could be classified any number of different ways. The new law will establish constancy, and clarify previously unclear registration requirements."

Classifications will break down as follows: Altered vehicles manufactured before 1949 will be categorized as street rods, and altered vehicles at least 30 years old and manufactured after 1948 will be categorized as customs. Kit cars and replica vehicles will be assigned certificates of title bearing the same model years as the production vehicles they most closely resemble.

The law will also acknowledge that original parts may no longer be available, and that technological advancements have created improved materials. It will allow for the use of non-original components and will create a titling criterion that assigns these vehicles the same model year designation as the production vehicle they most closely resemble.

Further, the law will exempt street rods and customs from a range of standard equipment requirements and emissions inspections; vehicles in this class will be held to standards applicable to the designated model year. Finally, the use of "blue dot" taillights will be permitted, a favorite among restorers of classic automobiles.
Sounded good to me so we gathered at his shop and looked over his collection of buildable stuff and gravitated towards a 1929 Ford (Yes, that 4 letter word that starts with an "F".) He had a frame, some engine parts and a few old racing parts so we started... Last week we headed out to the war surplus place near here and we found our body. Today we added a gas tank (just behind the back wheels inside the cone. We started it up and took a short drive. She need work; but, we are now well on the way. How about Bonneville Salt Flats in September. We are going for over 100 mph...

Hi all, just been on the annual Beach Hop run at Wangamata, started last Wednesday and finished Sunday, there were 1150 cars preregistered,
Its all based on the fifty's and sixty's music and was great as even despite the rain on 2 days
there was only a couple Hudson/Essex there there was a 31 Essex sedan and a Terraplane rat rod and a 28 panel wagon, will post later

We did very well down there, Took out the Miners Choice at Wahi (a mining town) on the Wednesday and Got an award for making the top 5 shoot out for the whole event pretty good since I had to fight out against the fords Chevy and plastic cars etc
I was told that she had made the top 10 the previous year as well

The whole event at the Beach Hop was great and the door prizes this year was a 62 Thunder Bird,A 48 Bonus Truck and a flat head engine, as Ford was one of the major sponsors

The coupe has been invited to be put the car on display at the Hamilton 500 in a month or so in Hamilton (north Island) with forty other cars,
This is part of the Australian V8 super car series and have the importunity to meet the guys from ZZ Top as they a rodding nuts
We are waiting for details to be sent to us
There is a new Tv channel starting up and they filmed the event when this is going to be shown is still TBC and they filmed the old girl as part of the shoot out
thanks

Has anyone tried to put a 46 4dr on a late model Ranger frame??? Just picked a 1990 Ford 351w Police Interceptor engine, and would like run a 5 spd. If a Ranger frame will work, I can have disc brakes, powers steering and save money on replacement parts (along with the headache of finding Hudson parts), and not have to worry about twisting that old differential. I would really like to keep the body looking original, but with the convience of a updated drive train. At least this way, it could be a daily driver. If I'm going to all the work of restoring it, I want to be able to drive it whenever I like with some reliability.

Okay, finally getting a chance to give an update on my sub frame progress. A couple months ago I ordered a Fatman Fab stub frame for the '49 Hudson. It showed up about 5 weeks later and I went and picked it up from Conway Trucking down in south Renton. To my surprise it was only ~$120 to have it shipped from North Carolina. Saved about $100 bucks by picking it up with my truck in their yard. Anyway, brought it home and uloaded it from the back of my truck. By this time I had the entire front clip off the Hudson. The following pictures somewhat provide a step by step process of cutting off the old stub frame and positioning the new one.

Here's the clip removed:

The first thing to do is try to precisely locate the front axle centerline and mark it on the floor - need a plumb bob for this:

Then you need to precisely locate the radiator core support since this essentially locates the entire front clip (fenders, grill, hood, etc). Mark this point on the floor and measure how high it is from the floor. The same needs to be done for the bumper bolt holes in the frame.

Here's where I departed from the instructions somewhat. They wanted me to cut the frame at a measured distance from some rivets on the old frame under the firewall. I figured that I could better align the new stub by locating it directly under the old sub-frame then use the plumb bob to locate the cut location. I cut an extra 1/8th of an inch off to leave a gap to fill in with weld when the new one goes on.

Once I was happy with the alignment, marks on the floor, and cutting lines on the old frame, it was time to bust out the sawsall. At one point I asked my friend if I should take the old brake lines off and get them out of the way.....he promply replied "those fall into the 'all' category of the sawsALL". We both laughed and I started sawing.

I'll post more pics as I have time!

35 Hudson

It looks as though I am going to be swaping into this 4 door sedan. It has 4 suicide doors and has part of an 8 cylinder engine. It has a small hump back trunk that is part of the body.
Interesting front door window mechanisms, You Hudson guys will no doubt know what I am refering to.
The seats are there as well as the inside window garnish ect.
It has mechnical brakes, straight axel, and what looks like an electric shifting mechanism.
If there would be any interest in this car I would be inclined to sell it outright.
It is in kind of a dark garage so I could not get real good looks at it, but it is a very nice art deco style body with very little rust and very few dents. I am told that it has been inside for 40 years or so and from the dust I would not dispute this. I dont think that all 40 years was in the same place as you can tell from the pics.
It looks like it was partly dissassembled and then all of the parts put inside then put into storage.
I dont have it yet, but if there is an interest in it I will go get it. The current owner wants what I have and wants to do this trade.
If no one wants it then I expect it will get upgraded suspension and a Hemi. Then there will be original parts for sale.
Located in NW Oregon.
