FYI

On another forum I was lurking around trying to help this other rodder (and myself) and found out some information I thought I'd share with you hot rodders.

Many of you know I am putting a Heads Up Display in the 49.

Since I'm using older 454/TH400 the TH400 didn't have a VSS signal output to hook into the HUD computer.

I'm sure there are other manufacturers that make these units but Dakota Digital has a VSS pulse generator for under 50.00 that hooks into a standard speedo cable output and generates the VSS signal.

SEN-01-1 - 8K pulse generator with adaptor cable for GM transmissions with cable drive speed output.

The cool thing I noticed was that they also make a "pass-thru" device so that you could still run your analog speedo but have the VSS signal for additional goodies or your own Heads Up Display to augment your mechanicals!

Good stuff to keep in mind as you are planning your build!

Jay,
Just had time to get to your reply. YOU CAN keep your bench seat along with the platform that the seat sits on AND the cross brace that goes across under the seat platform. You must remember the history of what I was doing. I first started out with replacing the firewall, front floors and trans tunnel with the idea keeping the original drive train. At mid-stream I changed my mind and wanted to go to a late model drive train. This is when things went weird. All that fabrication was for nothing. Then I wanted comfort so I wanted bucket seats. Things got weirder. So with all this said, I lowered the seat area for the Lincoln Town Car bucket seats to fit, I raised my engine about an inch and then set it back as far as I could. The combination of all these modifications reeked havoc on the stock trans tunnel at the firewall . Rambo's Ride Pics show what can be done without altering the seat platform and cross brace. I would hold off cutting anything at the firewall and trans tunnel until you get the new clip in place and try to shoehorn in the engine/trans. At that point you can start "carefully" cutting away any sheet metal that hinders the installation and build from there. Re-welding what you just cut out is a bummer.
Just a suggestion.
Peace,

The April 2007 Issue of Rodders Digest has a great article on installing a panhard bar : No Sway the Easy Way.

They get into just enough of the reasoning behind the panhard workings, some basic math on setting it up and how to set it up.

The article is referencing a panhard bar with a 4 link setup but I think the basics work for setting up a newer panhard bar for a stepdown rear.

The article also references www.welderseries.com which looks to be a pretty neat site for some pre-fab-post-welded kits for anything from motor mounts, gussets, panhard bars... tons of stuff...I'm saving the link to my favorites!
Heres a link and some pictures of building the panhard bar mounts... http://www.welderseries.com/instructions/panhard_rear/rear_panhard_assembly.htm

Update: Lightening Front Seat "Seat-Pan"

I finally got to tear the front seat down to the skeleton today

The seat back itself is a fairly thin sheet metal on the curved portions and then there are 2 large voids in the center covered with a cardboard/fibreboard type material like used in the door panels.

For the upper portion of the seat I don't see much use in trying to lighten this area any further given the thin sheet metal used and the large spaces from the factory.

The bottom of the seat pan is another story. The outside "sides" have a 3'x2' 10-12 gauge support piece then the lower seat pan (approx 14 gauge) is sandwiched ontop of those pieces + at least 2 thin sheet metal c-channel pieces (thin metal like the top) that give it additional support.

Both lower side pieces in my seat have stress cracks in the steel (Not from my fat bum!) so I think I am going to tear out the bottom and make a framework from 3/4" box thick wall tubing.

I REALLY roughly and approximately estimated the size and weight of the significant lower seat pan pieces and compared them with the minimum and maximum length of 3/4" in feet that I would need (25' min - 50' max)

Depending on how it all works out I think I can shave somewhere between 10-25 lbs out of the seat pan by doing this.

I am looking for a 1934 Hudson Terraplane 5 window coupe, we built the car in South Dakota in the mid 80's it was sold to a gentleman in Utah(1988). He sold it in the mid 90's to someone in the Northeast. After that I lost track of the car. It had a 350 chevy, with a powerglide. Corvette white paint, cyclone wheels, gray interior with "Hudson" stitched in the fabric below the rear window. 2 box jump seats & a Wood dash panel. It was our first car and I would love to know where it is now if you have any information I would appreciate and email. Thanks Ann
My question is has anybody tried the higher compression 175 cid cylinder head, performance re-grind of the camshaft, port or extrudehone the exhaust manifold, use the 308 Hornet Carter 2bbl over the stock 212 Carter WDO carburetor?

For sale 1953 Hudson Wasp (may be Super Wasp) vin #232919 I purchased and paid for this car today (don't even have it yet) that I saw in Hemming's

publication, see following ad:

$ 995 1953 Hudson Hornet Roseville, CA

Vehicles: HUDSON: 1953 Hornet 4-door, rust-free body, 6-cyl, auto, missing exterior trim, bumpers, grille, will run, $995. 916-899-0809, 916-496-0743, CA. Category: Collector Date Posted: 12/20/05

Car is exactly like the owner described in ad, I just received many pictures if anyone interested, Bob (gentleman I purchased from) informed me the car was driven to present location and parked with four relatively new WWW tires (probably not too good now)? Complete exterior front, four doors and quarter panel's had some body work and painted in primer, roof and trunk wasn't completed and from pictures has slight surface rust. Interior floor boards, trunk and frame real solid, car can be made into nice hot rod, however it has Hudson engine, dual range transmission drivetrain. I'll try and post a couple of the picture's I received from seller. Wasp presently is in Lake Tahoe/Placidville area. If anyone inerested, willing to buy and pick up from that area, cost will be cheaper, if not and I bring to Vegas, I'd expect to receive a little additional money for transportation. Personally I'm interested in 1953 Hornet complete car, reason I purchased car, I made a commitment and didn't want to back out of word.

I just thought I'd post a website for those of you that haven't completely made up your mind what tranny you want to use to replace the Hudson transmission. I chose the 700R4, because it gives the lowest gear for a hole-shot, but has a good overdrive gear for fuel mileage.

Hi to all.

Am now working on my third truck and this time I'm going with the following-

460 ford engine.

Another toploader from David Kee (what a great mod. he does on this box for these vehicles).

9' ford rearend on 4 bar set up.

Now I'm looking for ideas on the front end. I'm fitting a modified firewall and new floor to get the drivetrain where I want it but need some options/opinions /ideas for the front end set up. I've measured up and the front crossmember and old centre link steering has got to go. I want to use a steering box rather than a rack for a more period look, even am considering big drum brakes again for looks which would have to be Ford/Hudson wheel stud pattern, but don't know what to do for suspension.Someone even suggested a beam axle with coilovers could look good and function well but

I still fancy some form of independant set up with a conventional steering box. How about a front clip from something?

What's been done? anybody got any first hand experience with a similar project?.Although it's a big block set up it will be a mild build engine based around low end torque not rev the guts out horsepower, I'm not a gas, horn, brake driver whether that part is even relevant I doubt.

Anyway thanks in advance and any input greatly appreciated.

I have decided to keep my stock rear end on my 49 for now and run with it and see if any problems crop up with axles and the like. This allows me to keep the original e brake set up although I did remove the clutch and brake set up including the master cylinder. I plan to put a vacuum assisted dual master on the firewall for convenience sake as well as allowing me to build a small console to house my floor shifter. My question is this: the brace that stiffens the ebrake mechanism runs from a vertical brace from the floor and then there is a rod going forward to the crossmember, will it be in the way of my th400 and drive shaft? I guess if it is I could run the rod to the back of the car instead of forward. Has any one else run into this? BTW I also plan on using the original drive shaft and just shorten the front of it and have a matching yoke put on to adapt to the tranny. Any been theres and done thats? Any advice. Thanks...Jim
