Been down to Vegas to the SEMA show. Got lots of pics and more ideas to use on the Essex project. Actually saw a Tucker Torpedo hot rod!! Now that takes balls to cut one of them up. I will post pics when my photos come back.Thousands of cars, no Hudson or Essex cars. Sure would like to finish mine and then drive it down. I actually got to shake hands with Boyd Coddington, feel like a teenage girl at a Donny Osmond concert! Did lots of research on frames, and new hemi motors for you guys. Anybody that says hot rods are a passing phase have never been to a show like this. Saw Fooses Ridler award roadster. Will post pics too, I was afraid to even breath on it it was so perfect. I just have to keep on track with the daily driver idea, I can see how easily it would be to go overboard, chrome, billet, four wheel this, hi po that, dream it up and it is available. Better go get another beer, starting to ramble and froth at the mouth!

Hi Jay,

Have you read the reply I sent you about your questions. One other thought. I wonder if a new steering column is used, an Ididit steering wheel adaptor could be used for the Hudson steering wheel? Also, if the steering sector is removed from the original steering column leaving only the steering shaft, maybe a friend at a machine shop could add GM splines at bottom to mate with a P/S unit? GM and Hudson both use a 3/4" shaft. This would be in lieu of the double "d". Just some thought.

Hear is a pic of my firewall thats going into Lola. The only problem with this is that I am now trying to engineer a different windshield wiper setup since I do not have the cables anymore.

I'm thinking about using the original steering column in my 50 Pacemaker with the power rack & pinion set-up. I remember seeing a product that was a push button electronic shifter that you could use instead column/floor shifter. Now I can't seem to find it (old age getting to me!) and as I remember it was only around $600-700 for the set-up, which is cheaper than a FR custom steering column with shifter. Anyone got any ideas?

A guy on another forum said he uses a GM truck column in his 1950 Pacemaker. I've asked him to let me know if he made a custom cover to hide the mounting bracket or does it just show.
I found your post this morning. I have an idea. Since we are trying to use the "Street Rods - General" for our modified Hudsons it might help to have our postings flagged for others by starting out with "HUDSON" followed by the title of the message. Just a suggestion. Check how this entry looks.

I have posted in the restores message board previously. But am wondering if you hot rod guys might have an original right side door latch mechcanism for a 1932 Hudson coupe. My coupe is a 5 window with suicide doors. I belive a mecanism from a 2 or 4 door sedan would be the same. Also the 1933 models look the same except for not having a visor over the windshield. The 32 has a visor.
I will try to get some pictures posted of the left side one that I have.

Hey guys....not rocket science, but if you ever need to weld up holes on a frame or something else where you can't easily get to the back side, the following worked pretty well for me. Here I'm welding up the steering box holes in the frame that I won't be needing since I'm putting a rack and pinion set up in.

First cut out some small flat pieces of sheet or bar stock (in this case I had a bunch of electircal box knock-outs). Then either spot weld or tack-weld on a piece of wire and "fish" it up the frame and through the hole. Then tack the filler piece in while holding it tight against the back side of the hole with the wire. Here you can see me holding the wire and couple more "made up" pieces sitting on top of the frame:

Tack them all in, and weld them up:

Then grind them smooth. I ended up having to go back and fill in some low spots, but it can look great if you take your time!!

Good luck!!!!
No sure what possessed them to pick that color scheme... Maybe that color was on sale, or there was a lot of paint left over, and it 'blended' into that color?

Carb to Intake Spacing

We all know our Hudsons use a gasket stack to space the carb up off the intake.

I know in modern engines this spacing can give more horse power, increase air flow and keep carb cooler.

Is there any dyno data for our Hudson engines that show differences in torque and horsepower using different stack heights?

I wondered if anyone has converted a step down Hudson 6 to serpentine? I did a search of the Forum and only found reference to a supercharger, and it retained the V-belt for the generator/waterpump.

Over the years, I have added a Sanden A/C compressor, then later an alternator, then Power steering pump. it's a real "Cluster" under the hood. Right now, I am driiving the PS pump from the unused A/C groove. I am building up a 308 to replace my 262 and I am going to clean up the mess. Since I am going to re-engineer all my mountings, I thought it would be a great time to simplify the system with a single serpentine . I have a single groove harmonic balancer that the groove was machined off and a double sheave bolted on . I will just unbolt the double sheave that is there and bolt a serpentine puley in it's place. If anyone has been there and done this. I would like to hear of your experiences. In the mean time, I plan on collecting a few pieces from the junk yard and start experimenting.

I guess I'll find out if all serpentines use the same width and groove pattern.

Last weekend I got a slip of paper with a bunch of notes from the builder of my '47 pickup truck.

Supposedly, the motor is a SB350 from a '78 Ohio State Police car. I don't know what that means exactly, anyboby have any ideas on that? I assume it would be a 4 bolt main, maybe special heads or something.

In addition to the motor, it has corvette valve covers, air cleaner, and side pipes. The trans is a T350, and the rear end is from a 79 Nova. Tailights are from a 70 Chevelle and driveshaft is 65 Ford.

There was many other notes on there as well, thing s that had been done or needed to be done. It should make my job a bit easier.

The truck is still in storage, hopefully I can get to it by late summer.

There were two different oil Dipper Trays in the Hudson 8's over the yrs...

If wanted to oval & road race an 8, which dipper tray to use? the higher oil level design dipper tray(with the rods actually rotating in the oil with friction & heat) or the dipper tray with a lower level set by holes in dipper tray? Thanks
