I am double posting this one.

I am in the process of rodding my 50 Pacemaker. I do not need the flathead, tranny, or drivemaster unit. Its a matching number motor, but isn't going to do me much good. Anyone want to make an offer? I'm a diet pepsi addict! lol I'd like to see it go to someone who could really use it (maybe its their first car and they don't have alot of money) and isn't just stock piling them. It supposedly (according to the guy I bought it from) has 2 or 3 broken head bolts (they have been left in the head so I'm not sure which ones are busted off. It has brackets for a GM alternator and a/c compressor (also have. but probably no good) and the aftermarket a/c unit inside. Car sat non-running for 10 years, but in a garage. I am keeping the dash switch for the drivemaster tough.....I'll use it to operate something.

Just as a side question.......I have rust thru on the front splash of the front fenders were they turn down behind the front bumper. Can one get replacement pieces for the fenders or do you have to repair the fenders as is? I see that there seems to be a different piece to the lower front section of the front bumpers, but mine was repainted and the seam was filled in.

My 50 Pace has a two-piece driveline in it. I'm changing out the engine/tranny (LT1/4L60e) and rear end (probably a Ford 9") and am wondering if anyone has used a one-piece driveline? Or are you stuck with a two-piece. I will be having one custom made, but would obviously rather have a one-piece rather than a two-piece. It seems to me that the wheelbase is short enough for a one-piece, but not sure if there are any other issues that come into play.

Boy did I score big! I followed JSRails link about Hotrodders.com.

I had been to the site before but never looked around.

They have a forum called Hot Rod Art and a guy in Spain that goes by the user name Malc does some nice line art drawings so I posted a 4dr Commodore ad out there last night and this morning this is what I was pleased to find!

I know - no bumpers, etc...! But close enough to do some playing around in Photoshop for colors and layouts.

This was the first Hudson anyone ever asked him to do. I'm sure you guys with the 2doors could ping him with a good side view picture and he would fix you up right!

Please! If you like these images make sure you go out and give the guy some props as they are free to use but don't try and make any money off this guys hard work!

If you are someone who wants a higher quality profile concept art done this person may be able to do it for pennies on the dollar...

Enjoy!

Woohoo it's 49c8.Com's 1 year Anniversary!

600mb of pictures and growing!

2096 unique (and counting) page hits on the homepage alone - and the web site has never formally been registered with any search service! This is in part thanks to you folks on the forum frequenting the site and passing the url along - but also to many other Hudson lovers around the world...surfing the internet trying to find any information on our beloved cars.

I know it's the "World Wide Web" and all but its been fun getting emails from people around the world who have found the site just stumbling around out there!

Just last night I got an email from a guy in Sweden who just bought a 1950 Commodore...

Something old is something new...

Per some user requests I put together a "Custom How To" -> "Trunk Pan" page that basically takes and outlines why I did what the heck I did and how I did it.

This solution wouldn't work for anyone trying to retain the original trunk/fuel tank location - but turned out well enough to warrant the page.

Sorry there aren't any pictures of the actual fabrication work like you would see in "Street Rodder" but I can't take pictures during fabrication 'cause I need both hands and Rambo has no opposable thumbs to operate the camera:D

I also added just a few pictures here and there on other noted pages that I ran across that weren't posted before.

As far as progress on the 49 ...

Brrrr....it been a rainy cold month here in the pacific northwest and between the weather and the seemingly ever present "personal budget shortfall" - seems I haven't had the motivation to get outside and finish the remaining bullet points before going to media blasting and they are..

Money for the blasters (600-800.00)

Finish fit and weld and cleanup of the passenger front floor board (I just finished the drivers side but no pictures yet...)

Finish fit and adjustment of Cadillac Trunk pulldown - about 2 hours left on this one. Details should be in the next website update.

Remove remaining brake lines, gas lines, brackets that will not remain.

1 spot on the roof and rear interior floor pan that require some shrinking with a torch (this I'll do at the body shop on the trailer as it will eventually be towed to media blasting - someday...maybe...)

A big THANKS TO ALL of you who have visited the site and especially those who have given me feedback on what works and doesn't work for you - keep it coming!

My Father just phoned me to inform me that his 37 chevy truck was totally destroyed in a fire. His garage, tools, everything, total loss. Spark from wood fired boiler. Interesting lesson here for the guys on the forum. Because the truck was semi finished and not licenced yet, he had not bought insurance. I know he should have known better, but sometimes when you are not using the vehicle, you do not even think of storage insurance or even just fire and theft. Same garage the Essex would have been in had he not given it to me a few years earlier! He wants to get right back in the saddle with another project. I think I have one for him. You have heard the stories of old farmer with hidden cars right, well I have one for you. Me and a buddy were over at another friends place checking out some war era army jeeps that he had bought and I was making a comment like " not too much old stuff left around" and he says, that he had bought the property a few years ago and the owner had some stuff stored in the chicken coup on the back of the property and he thought there was a 20s something car in there. I whip back there in a flash and find guess what 1929 Model A Roadster Pickup!. Sitting there, top rotted off, but all complete, air still in some tires, motor will turn with crank, basically complete truck. Even has tailgate attached. Told my Dad about it and we are in the process of haggling a deal with the old farmer. Have already located a flathead and are going to build a highboy style 50's hotrod out of it. Cool eh! 10 minute drive from the house. I am not a Ford guy, so can anybody fill me in on the interchange of parts to modifiy the existing frame and suspension like they used to do? Like using the A axle and turning the spring around and adding disc brakes and such?

Just got back from a quick look around at the 2005 Good Guys Run here in Scottsdale, AZ this morning. I posted a few pics of a 49 Super Six which was the only Hudson I saw. It seems mostly original and has a Twin H set-up. The owner wasn't around the car so didn't get a chance to talk with them. It is for sale, but can't remember what they were asking.

Pics are in my gallery (jsrail) at:

The show was for Pre-73 autos and trucks and there was some nice machines. A few nice show cars, but we didn't look much there as I'm not very interested in show quality, I like the ones which are driven on a regular basis. A nice lowered 68 El Camino 327 was there, as well as some cool 55 and 56 Buicks and Olds! One car I loved was a 55 Nash Metro convertible-tubbed, big block chevy, roll cage, etc. etc.-not sure how he stuffed all that in there (probably just connected the transmission directly to the rear end!) but it was very cool!

I'll post this on the Hudson general section as well.

Sorry I didn't get more pics but with a toddler you don't get to spend all day! But hey, a morning is better than not going at all!

 Many Hudson/Essex/Terraplane (HET) owners I know own BOTH modified AND stock/restored cars (see D. Spring thread below). Some started their collection with a stock car, some with a modified. Hudson product owners have been modifying their cars since 1910. Even the factory built race cars, stepdown pickups, etc. It's ALL good...

It is perfectly okay to have a different opinion/idea on anyone's car, but lets try to be civil about our comments. I am by no means thin-skinned, just trying to keep our forum on the upbeat side, unlike some of the comments you get on other forums.

HUDSON - Modified windshield wipers

I am having to use something different in place of the original wipers since I have the flat firewall and I will not have any holes in it for the old cables. I have tried a couple of things. Two problems to overcome are, 1.) the great curve in the windshield and 2.) the V-shaped trough under the windshield.

1. The windshield curve puts the two wiper transmissions at a greater angle from each other than on other cars which binds when using any type of mechanical linkage. I have tried using a New Port Engineering 12-volt motor and bracket with heim fittings at all 4 ends of the mechanical linkages but then everything gets "loosy goosey". Plus, the wiper motor doesn't want to go back to "park" when it is cut off. It has been sent back to the factory and readjusted but this only worked temporarily.

2. The trough below the windshield is so large it keeps me from placing any wiper transmissions up close to the cowl such as the Specialty Power Windows unit.

Possible solutions:

1. Notch the V-shaped trough up to where the windshield mounting rubber begins (about half way) and then try to use the Specialty Power Windows unit. This would hinder the trough from being used for what it was originally indended for, water drainage. I don't know if this notching would cause a problem when taking out or installing the windshield.

2. Use Russell Chilton's idea of 2 separate motors one for each side such as the ones used on T-bucket Rods. Might still have an interference problem with the trough the windshield sits in.

Any other ideas?

This is what I am starting with Essex

This is a pic of my 1928 Essex coupe that I will be rodding. It is a solid all steel body. My plans are:

2 x 3 tube frame (already built for the car)

9in ford rear with triangulated four bar

rear coil over shocks

4 wheel lincoln disc braking

Mustang 11 front end (better for highway crusing than straight axle)

front coil over shocks

1958 354 Chrysler Firepower hemi - 4 barrel carb, mild cam, headers etc.Finned aluminum covers, red engine block and red accents.

700R4 Automatic for cruising

Full Fenders and bumpers, no roof chop, small enough inside already

No hood

SS firewall to show off the hemi

Wide whites with red steelie wheels

Solid gloss black

Red and black tuck and roll interior, rumbleseat done to match, my daughters enjoy riding in it!

Skulls head shifter

All cowl lights, stock headlights and chrome wind wings

Chrome door handles and bumpers and rad shell with gloss black shutters and red pinstiping(hot rod style)

The idea is to keep the Essex looks, give it a nostalgia rod feel, make it look different (hemi powered instead of chevy) and build a nice highway driving car. But when you see it, you will know it is not a Ford or Chevy but an Essex. My dream is to do the hotrod power tour and enjoy the car with out breaking the bank to build it. It was a gift from my father, he wants to see it made into a nice rod as well. He even helped me get the hemi, which i found in an old military air compressor.

I am sure I will never see another one the same as mine!!! I hope you guys will be supportive and not negative as some purists are, but I think rodding a car is just as cool as restoring and believe that cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed and seen!!
