Well finally got time to start to tear the old girl apart. Came apart very quickly. The hemi is at the machine shop and I am going to complete the frame and body mods. I am toying with shoving in a built up Mopar small block that I have hanging around (rebuilt for another project but lost interest so I got it cheap) so I can drive it until the Hemi is finished and then put it in in the winter. Starting to collect parts and as soon as the motor mounts are welded in I will paint and complete the frame and she will come together very quickly. Attached pics are tear down and the body just sitting on block on the new frame so I can be rolled around. Just fabbin up motor and body mounts and then can lower it down. Frame has 9 in ford rear and Fiero front clip. Wheels are early Dodge Valiant steelies
Cheers,

O.k., I did a search and couldn't find the original thread. If I need to pull a Hydramatic tranny out of a step-down, do I remember right in that it comes out of the top, i.e., through the interior of the car? The minimal damage to the tranny so far is that the front seal is leaking and needs to be replaced. We're going to take the tranny apart and ascertain what else we might have that's burned up, besides my patience.

I recently came across a '27 or '28 Essex 2-door sedan body, chassis, rad shell, and front seat. I have NOT seen the car yet, and it's a few hours away. Guy wants to do some trading for it, and I'm thinking very seriously about trading (like I need another ^&#%$ project, but the price is right!). Here's what I'm looking to do, assuming I get the Essex and there's enough there to work with:

1) In last night's "Pinks" episode on Speed, there was a really cool (and fast!) '27 Ford tudor sedan the guy took and built a street-legal drag car out of basically what I have as a start. His is a 350 Chevy/TH350 tranny, Ford 9", one seat, nitrous, and a cool yellow primer job, three-inch chopped top, red wheels, wide whites, cheater slicks, and just a sprinkling of chrome. I saw that car and thought that would make for a fun and economical toy. The Essex would be done in a similar way.

2) Engine would be a '69 Chrysler 440 I've had for the last year, built and ready for go! Chrysler 727 auto, narrowed Mopar 8-3/4" rear with 4.10 gears, steel wheels with Moon covers, and more fun stuff. Primer grey with flames, of course! A Mopar-powered Essex rod would be the stand-out in a field full of Chevy-powered Ford rods, IMO!!!

3) With what I'd have in parts so far, plus getting the car and finishing, I figure I'll have less than $5K in getting the thing on the road and driving (maybe for the Nats???)

So, that's what's up so far. Should know something on the trade situation before 20 Dec or so. I'm not looking for another car to do, but this one just beckons!

This ones been on ebay before for more money I think...And I know no one likes the 4doors but me...and even though the body is a bit rough...for 299.00 you could get a cheap builder.

I paid 1600 (+500 shipping) for my 49 Commodore and even though my car was basically 98% complete, non-runner and needs to be completely torn down like this one...in defense to my surprise my 49 had never been hit or repaired ever...REALLY! Of course I bought it site unseen thinking I could restore it and we all know that's not gonna happen!

Again for 299 you could even buy it as a practice car for chopping and channeling! Make it into a drag strip car, parade float whatever...

Beefing the Frame

I was thinking the other day of all the stuff I should do when the car goes into the welder's shop (for the MII install). Since I am considering a 4 link rear suspension, I understand the frame would have to be "beefed" up, maybe "z'd" or something. My question is....if I build supports that run underneath the body, would they have to be tacked or welded to the underside of the body or not? If I didn't, would there be vibration or rattling noises to drive ya crazy? Or would you just make crossmembers and such slightly less height than the top of the original frames so it wouldn't touch the body underneath?

I've not had to deal with a unibodied car before.

Well, another day......another issue!

Finally got the left front fender and the front grill, radiator support and everything else off the front. Had to grind most of the bolts off, but thats not really an issue.

Now the frame! That lower corner of the main crossmember is as I saw before. Hole in the bottom and front side, though I think it can be fixed with some plating. The passenger side is fine. The driver's outer frame rail.......bad from about 1" from the bottom to the bottom along that side, both inside and outside of the lower portion of the rail. Haven't got the passenger side panels off yet, but looks like the same problem from the front to about half way to the rear wheel. Removed the door sill on the driver's side and the top and upper part of the frame rails are VERY solid. I think I'm going to go ahead and remove the rear fenders. It appears the interior pieces have to come out to do this as well as the seat?

AHH, another day in the life! But would it be fun if there wasn't any challenges? lol

Hope everyone is further on their holiday shopping than I am!

I got to have half the day today for some work on my front end tear down. I don't seem to have the smarts to set pics up on this thread, but I have posted them in my gallery (jsrail) with the date 12_11_05 on the pics from today.

I was able to get the right front fender off. Most of the bolts holding the fender to the center grill sheetmetal are so rusted that I have to use a cutting wheel on them. My 4" grinder and Dremel did the job fine without damaging the fender. A couple of the bolt brackets are not even on both pieces of metal! I may have to go with different fenders if I can find ones in better shape. Inner wheel wells on both sides have some surface rust where they bolt to the firewall (dirt collection point) but are otherwise in great shape! However, the rear fenderwells are shot! Too much throwing up road salt I imagine. There are pieces connecting the front sheetmetal (where the grill bars bolt to) to the radiator support which are also shot full of rust and holes. but I'm going down to Al Saffrahn's sometime over the next few weeks to see his stuff, he thinks he has most of the sheetmetal I'm looking for.

A bad spot! Lower frame crossmember behind the driver's front tire. Rusted through one side (about 1" x 2") and on the underside (about 1 1/2" x 3"). It looks fairly easy to fix with some plating welded on though, though thats for my metal fab guy (I'm no welder for sure!).

Bad spot #2.......lower rocker trim piece bracket with 3 screws......so rusted I haven't been able to get them out. May have to grind and drill them out in order to remove the front fender. Major pain!

Well, thats about it for now. Felt good to get out working on it though. Sorry you Northerners, but it was t-shirt weather here during the day! Hope to keep updating as I go along. Trying to get some done before tax season gets here and I'm working 7 days a week (then it will sit until May)!

Now all I gotta due is find someone to take the drivetrain off my hands!

Malc did the line drawing (hotrodders.com) and I was playing around with Photoshop to come up with a rough idea of a paint layout so I can try and get some more sponsors - this one I'm sending to Barry Grant to see if they will sponsor me for a Six-Shooter Demon setup for the 454
