Hi all, Still looking at which way to go with my next 1941 truck, I still can't bring myself to 'clip' the front end. The only real interference problem I can see for a big block install is the steering box. Has anyone here fitted a big block of any kind into a '41/'47 using the stock front end (yes I apreciate the spring and brake issues which will also be addressed) I'm happy doing a firewall mod. and using if req'd a rear sump oilpan for whatever engine I use. I guess if all being possible my main question is this.- Can anyone suggest a more compact steering box etc that would mate up to the existing centre steer set up or am I talking crap and thinking the impossible.
He wants a convertible but can't afford the 60k and wants a modern drive train etc. Sooo. What if he buys a 36 coupe body and puts in on a different frame and revs it up with a cool but not to outrageous engine. Then he has a decent shop do the Hudson unthinkable of making it into a convertible. Well that is a dream I am having. So fellow hot-rod enthusiasts I need your expertise. I have some guys in our local club that build hot-rods and they all have ideas. Now I need your suggestions - knowledge and ramblings. Which model body - What frame and drive train - A hudson engine or a chevy etc. No I don't want a monster engine just something to have fun on the street with.
So help out a soon to be hudson street rodder and give me some of that well worn experience you all seem to have. Oh yeah the convertible is a definite. The other half has spoken.

Pacemaker Update #3

I guess its time for another update on the Pace. As some of you have heard, frame rot has become a major factor in my work. The entire outer framerails from behind the doors all around the trunk to the other side has rot from the bottom thru the top of the rails, and rot along the bottom from the rear of the doors to the front crossmember. Someone had gooped black stuff all over the rails and painted it black so it wasn't seen. I have no idea if it was the guy I bought it from or a prior owner, and its not really important now anyway. Even the sill under the quarter windows behind the rear fenders is almost rotted half away.

I called Al Saffrahn and we went in together to buy another 50 Pacemaker here in AZ. I will use the shell and frame (and probably the front fenders as well) and he will sell the rest. For any of you who haven't dealt with Al, he's a top notch guy and knows his Hud stuff well. I'm glad that he lives so close and is here to help. Kudos to you Al.

Dany Spring came by last weekend and took the original motor and tranny out of mine as I will be going with the modern drivetrain. He's got a nice plan for the gear, but I'll let him tell you about it! My wife and I meet his wife and daughters and had a great time.....they are good folks. And his daughter Ashley got right in there to work with us.....there's a Hudnut! I didn't realize that he was the K-Gap guy, my stupidity at its best! lol

So Al will have the 2nd Pace for a couple months which helps me since tax season is here and I have little to no time for any work until after June (we are traveling to New Zealand in May). I have some roof line work on the new Pace as it looks like someone lifted it with a cable and put small kinks on both sides. It looks very repairable and hasn't effected the door jambs or door alignment at all. And of course, I'll have to start stripping parts off mine to put on the new Pace when its ready.

The frame rot presents a small setback, but I'm not deterred. I take encouragement from Dan who has a bad (if not worse) problem than I, but he trudges forward. And many others have helped out as well (you know who you are!). Its still going to be a cool "leadsled" when I'm finished. May just a take a bit longer to get on the road than I originally anticipated!
Hmmm made me think of a good thread question...How many times and what damage has your Hudson done to you resulting in the need for urgent professional medical attention?
So far other than the normal cuts and scrapes and bruises my record on the 49 is 2 times within a 3 month span - both for scraping my eyeballs! No stiches or lingering after effects yet...knock on wood!

I am going to take my time (read need to find cash!) on the hemi engine and have decided to drop my fully built 340 small block into the car so I am able to drive it this summer and every winter do more mods on it. The engine is balanced, flat top pistons, cammed, stainless valves etc. 300 horse and I can't believe how good it fit in the frame. Just need to modify the motor and tranny mounts and shes in. As soon as that is done I am goint to pull her back apart and paint and detail everything. I have old school finned valve covers, air cleaner etc and I think the engine will be black with red details to match the car. It is going to be black with silver and red accents, red smoothie wheels, white walls and fill fenders and running boards. Just rambling, getting excited that I finally am making some progress.
Cheers,

Hello all,

I am a new member and could use some opinions and/or HELP locating of some hard to find parts. Here is what I am trying to achieve with my 37 Hudson series 74 4dr.: It is an original rust free New Mexico car which has approx 66k miles and sat for over 40 years. I have gotten it running again but have just done the basics to get it going. I have to say it's been a hoot, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the crowds gathering around it at the local wends night gathering!

Since I am looking to do a resto-rod and am considering keeping the nice patena on the paint (barn fresh look), I am focusing on the drivetrain and suspension. Needs/Wants: Edmunds alum head, Dual or triple carb intake & extra carbs, another cam to re-grind, person to regrind too!, overdrive for tranny or replacement ford rear end, Headers, distributor upgrade, basically I want to hotrod the orig 8cyl engine/drivetrain so if someone is experienced forward a name & number!

I am planning on flipping the front axle and add lowering blocks to the rear. So if anyone has suggestions on brakes orig or upgrades? Other Original parts Wanted/Needed: Hood ornament base and grill center pieces top to bottom, orig Hudson hubcaps/trim rings, exterior fog lamps & horns, fender lamps, radio, other original options. I am also considering upgrading to 12 Volt, any suggestions/books,etc. Anything else for suggestions or ideas are welcome, (please be nice) I know I am looking for a lot of needles in the haystack but anyones help is appreciated.

This is whats going in my Hudson so I can have the real Hudson wheels. The rotors are Camaro that I took to my favorite machine shop and they redrilled the bolt pattern to Hudson specs.

Can anyone tell me if someone makes weld on leaf spring pads for the Hudsons? I noticed that the leaf springs turn inward at the front and the spring pads appear to accomidate this. I know you can buy pads that are parallel all day long, but not sure about the hudsons. If I don't go the 4 link set-up, it would be nice to know if I can get pads I can weld on any rear end, without having to be so percise cutting off the pads I have now.

I was wondering what the rest of you guys doing your stepdown street rods are doing about your fuel tanks. Are you reconditioning the old tank or installing fuel cells. I was thinking about putting a cell in the trunk right behind the rear seat . Any thoughts?..Jim

Just something I 'threw' together this afternoon.

Pretty simple & neat little Excel spreadsheet - I'm sure someone out there can make it into a script file that wouldn't require Excel - If it already hasn't been done somewhere, and I am 're-creating the wheel'...
