A client of mine brought by a copy of the October 2006 issue of Street Rodder magazine and there is one of the most beautiful Hudsons I've seen. Its a '48 Commodore Sedan. This ride is a big $ job for sure, but it can give you some neat ideas. Though I'm not really a fan of fire engine red, this car is well done.

Chaz, check this one out, it was a 4 door turned 2 door.

He's even had "Hudson" painted on the valve covers, which I was considering trying to put small metal Hudson on my Vette covers. This one runs a 454 BBC.

It has some features well out of my price range, like scooped rear fenders, but it sooooo swweeeettt!!!!

Should be a darker color with ghost flames though!

I tried the website but couldn't find any pics to download. Maybe someone better than can do it, but the website probably sdoesn't allow it anyway. For you rodders, even buying the magazine this issue is worth it.

WTN Articles Needed!!!!!

I posted this as a thread response on the other forum, but thought it most important to post here:

"Okay guys, lets see about getting some articles together. Sam, if you are reading this, how is your editorial staff? If we can put some paragraphs together, can your staff make them into a sensible coherent article? Most of us are writing deficient and couldn't write an article if we tried. Or we are only beginning our projects.

Or maybe those of you who have done some of your own websites might like to contribute some words and pics from your web pages as a start?"

I think there is probably alot of great info and tips relating to Hudson rodding or customizing out there and it has been stated that if we get some of this together, they will print it in the WTN. I like some of the WTN, but would like to see some articles on modifieds and tips and tricks in the mag. As I stated above, maybe some of you who have already set-up your own websites with narrative and pics could get something together for an article for the WTN. You could focus on one item only, saving others for future articles. I'm sure the WTN staff could do some grammatical editing for those of us without great writing skills. My car is not ready for major steps yet, but maybe I could write some on "why you don't buy a stepdown out of the Northeast sight unseen!"

I think we could get more exposure for customizers in the Club and attract more potential members if we could do some of this.

A friend of mine showed me an article on these wheels and it got me thinking about aluminum wheels on the hudson to save some weight -

Q, Has anyone run an aluminum wheel within the confines of having the skirts on and without other significant mods? If so what type of wheel was it?

But...wouldnt these look cool with a Moon Disc Center? and just a little icing on the cake...17.5 lbs each  AMAZING! Add some carbon fibre disc brakes - then really see what the Hudson could do!

"The Dymag carbon/magnesium wheels have nearly half as much rotational inertia as forged aluminum wheels," says company founder Warren Mosler. "And, of course, pursuant to our imperative for total performance, the large savings in unsprung weight improves handling and ride qualities as well as our already extreme acceleration, braking and cornering."

Okay folks, another update............

Here's the donor sitting at Al Saffrahn's yard. We spent this morning stripping all the parts off he wanted. Managed to get it all done before it really got hot! When we stopped it was only 100 degrees in the shade @ 11:00am!

The driver's side.........

Here's the worst spot. A kink in the roofline above the driver's door. The jamb looked alright with the door installed, but the roofline is going to need some work, I may have to cut a section from my car the weld in place here.

Alright, another question folks. I have decided to go with either a Ford 9" or 8.8" solid rear axle w/ disc brakes and have it narrowed to the correct width. I may use an airbag mounted to the leaf pack for lowering purposes as a starter method (ultimately a triangulated 4 link will be in the works). I just need to make I can use the same airbags on the 4 link later.

So how many and which leaves should I remove? I can't see them now as the leaf packs are all wrapped and undercoated!

And a side thought...........when I go with the 4 link, should I use chrome or powder coated arms? Its gonna be a daily driver and see alot of miles, so my thinking is the chrome would end up looking bad, and therefore, not worth the extra money. If its powder coated they won't looks so bad after awhile?

Oh, if only I could win the Powerball!
Here's something I really don't understand...Suspension changes...I know that the tech has changed in 50 years but it Seems to me like most people just look for something that will fit or is pre fabricated without any consideration for the differences in ride height, weight, weight distribution, or geometry between the "donor" and the Hudson. (donor here means new or used parts...)

For instance everyone just looks for a shock that bolts on and fits regardless of what car that shock was made for. That newer car could be +-200-1000+- lbs different in weight - let alone width, ride height, weight distribution, and basic stock handling charateristics

So Is a something like a Mustang II Suspension really a lateral swap for handling improvements - or just convienant? * Last time I drove a Mustang it was a lot different than driving a Cadillac...

At the least I beleive a "donor" car should match in size and weight/weight distribution and basic handling characteristics as closely as possible.

So if anyone is interested...my plan is to have new springs made front and rear to the ride height I want (Jay-note: thats 'ride height' not "parked height" ) and it will be based upon the actual running vehicle weight when completed - not what I think it is - and not what the owners states (too many mechanical and fabrication changes - I'm actually thinking the 49 will come in lighter than factory specs...)

Same goes for the shocks - rather than spend $100.00 and change for off the shelf "wonder what it really fits" shocks I will have some built for around $250.00 that AGAIN will be based upon the actual running vehicle weight when complete - not what I think it is - and not what the owners states - AND the shocks will either be adjustable or set to the handling preference I prefer.

All told I should be into all new springs and shocks - made specifically for the application for well under 1k!

So there you go - Let's get a discussion rolling and see I can learn something new! (like maybe how to typo...)

Step Down Rear End Widths

I just got done having my wife help me measure the rear end width on my '50 Pacemaker. Looks like 50 3/8" inside backing plate to inside backing plate, and 56 3/4" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface (give or take a small amount).

Does this seem to jive with other's measurements?

I have heard nothing regarding the Hudson Dana axle conversion yet (I emailed the Stude guy doing the research, but no response), and am now leaning more towards just getting a custom made Ford 9" (My MII uses the Ford 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern). Here is a website I found on custom built rear ends http://www.9inchfloater.com/index.asp . Take a look and tell me what you guys think. I don't need a racing rear end, but something to handle the SBC I'm running. Currie just seems to be very expensive (around $2,400) and this website seems to have them complete with pumkin for around $1,200 to $1,700. Yes, Currie uses Wildwood disc brakes and they can weld your spring pads exactly how the original is set up (hence a higher cost and you must ship them your original rear end). But I'm thinking more and more about a 4-link set-up w/ airbags, so I don't end up changing it later down the road.

Open for discussion gentlemen................

Thanks.....Jay
